Vikings Push Win Streak to 13

The Augustana women extended their winning streak to 13 games Wednesday night with an 81-67 home win against Dakota State that was neither easy nor pretty.     After building a big lead in the first half, the Vikings didn't play at a level that pleased Augustana Coach Dave Krauth.

"You have to give Dakota State a lot of credit - they hustled, got their hands on a lot of balls and made plays," said Krauth.  "But I didn't like our effort level in the second half.  We gambled a little too much, which gave them some looks and some numbers advantages".

With the score tied at 9 in the early going, Augie went on a 24-6 run to take a 33-15 lead.  Freshman guard Andrea Walsh was the spark, hitting four 3-pointers in as many attempts for 14 first-half points.

Augie went up by 23 at 47-24, but the Lady T's scored the final seven points of the half, then opened the second with a 20-9 run that pulled them to within five at 56-51.

"I was pleased with our effort in this game", said DSU Coach Jeff Dittman.  "Even when we got down in the first half, I thought we were playing hard, we just had some problems with their defensive pressure.  Our athletes really got after the defense in the second half which then fueled our running game."

Much of that run was spearheaded by point guard Nicole Geraets, a former Augie player who transferred to DSU last year.  She led the Lady T's with 15 points.

Also adding double-figure scoring to the Lady T's total was Jessica VanLoy and Laura Tewes with 12, followed by  Jill Hansen with 10 points.   Ashley Mailey led DSU's rebounding efforts with 9 while VanLoy accounted for 9 steals.

"They just kept being aggressive," said Vikings senior guard Alison Adamson.  "I think our intensity waned a little bit, and we got comfortable with that 20 point lead."

DSU got no closer than that five, but that rough stretch for the Vikings ended up overshadowing an otherwise eventful night.  Adamson's 10 points gave her 1,000 for her career, while Walsh's game-high 18 points set a career high.  Ashley Holiday had 17 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and six blocked shots.
