Dakota
State University could have an interesting ride to a
possible March date in Sioux City for the NAIA National
Women's Basketball Tournament.
DSU's Lady T's, the No. 1 seed in the DAC
Playoffs, faced bottom-seeded Valley City State at home
Tuesday. The Lady T's
needed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by
Tricia Boldt at the end of the first period, and
a second-half opening scoring run, to get a 69-62
postseason win for Coach Jeff Dittman, whose Lady T's
are now 20-9.
DSU was behind Valley City State by as much as 11
points, 13-24, at the 8:30 mark before
Boldt launched her half-ending
3-pointer to get the Lady T's within a point, 30-31, of
the Lady Vikings at halftime.
DSU opened up the second half with a 7-0 scoring
run to put the Lady T's on top 37-30.
Mallory Undlin and Loni Hall field goals got the Lady
Vikes back to within two points, 40-38 and 42-40, twice
in the second half. With
free throws by Angela Carr and
Maria Gengler in the last half minute of the contest,
DSU iced the win.
Carr was the Lady T's top scorer, nailing 17 points on
5-for-8 field goal shooting, pushing the Lady T's to
27-for-61 field goal shooting.
Gengler was close behind, cashing in 15 points. Laura
Tewes completed DSU's double-figure scoring with 14
points. Tricia Boldt added seven points and Stacy
Dunklau had six. DSU also won the rebounds' battle,
producing a decided 45-33 rebound advantage. Tewes
yanked down nine of those 45 rebounds. Gengler also had
eight rebounds and Dunklau and Sara Nelson each had
five.
"We did a great job of getting second-chance
opportunities due to our offensive rebounds," said
Dittman. "The 20 offensive boards were one of the
biggest keys to our coming back from 10 points down in
the first half."
Valley
City, however, forced the Lady T's into 22 turnovers.
"We just have to make better decisions and read our
opportunities a little better," said Dittman.
DSU's
defense limited VCSU to just 22-61 field goal shooting.
"Overall, our defense was pretty solid," said
Dittman. "We did give Valley City too many opportunities
from the free throw line late in the game, but I like it
that we were playing aggressively."
Tewes came through with three blocked shots and Jessica
VanLoy, Dunklau and Nelson each had two. VanLoy and
Boldt each had two steals.
Dittman acknowledged Carr, Gengler, Tewes and
Boldt, whose solid play was a big
factor in the win.
The Lady T's couldn't quite contain the Lady Vikes' top
scorer Lon Hill, who had 22 points.
Mallory Undlin was the only other VCSU player to
score in double figures, popping in 19 points. Undlin
also had eight rebounds and five steals and Hall added
four assists.
On
Friday at the Fieldhouse, DSU will host fifth-seeded
Black Hills State, which defeated S.D. Tech 78-73 on
Tuesday.
In other quarterfinal play Tuesday, Jamestown College
defeated Mayville State University 64-58 and Minot State
outlasted Dickinson State 56-49 in overtime.
