South Dakota Tech went on a 15-1 spurt over a two minute
span midway through the second half and went on to
defeat Dakota State University, 77-68, in Dakota
Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Friday
night. The Lady
Hardrockers outscored the Lady Trojans, 26-10 in the
first 10 minutes of the second half.
"We changed things up defensively," said South Dakota
Tech coach Barb Felderman. "We got a little more
aggressive. We have some kids that can shoot the ball
and we kept moving it around the perimeter. We got some
good looks at the basket and shot pretty well from the
three-point line tonight."
The Lady Hardrockers shot 40 percent from the
three-point line connecting on 11 three point shots, one
shy of the school's single-game record, including
6-of-12 in the second half. Brenda Bassett and Melanie
Vedvei each connected on four three-point shots, while
Jennie Malone nailed three of them. Malone led all
scorers with 24 points. Vedvei chipped in with 23 points
and Bassett added 14 points.
For the Lady T's, Angela Carr
poured in 18 points, Jessica Van Loy and Jill Hansen
each had 13 points and Laura Tewes scored 12 points.
Dakota State University led 33-31 at the half, but South
Dakota Tech outscored the conference leaders 46-35 in
the second half. The two teams were tied at 42-42 with
just less than 12 minutes left in the second half. The
Lady Hardrockers scored the next 10 points and 15 of the
next 16 points in that two-minute stretch to break the
game open.
DSU Coach Jeff Dittman said he was a little disappointed
in his team during that stretch. "We had some different
people in the lineup and they just didn't respond very
well to the pressure and they panicked a little bit," he
said. "It was a little disappointing that we couldn't
keep our composure a little bit better.
"(South Dakota) Tech is a good ball team and they don't
make a lot of mistakes," he added. "You have got to
take care of the ball and not
make a lot of mistakes with them. We had twenty-two
turnovers tonight. That is inviting (South Dakota) Tech
to shoot you out of the gym."
Coach Felderman said her team picked up its intensity
and rebounded well against a taller Lady Trojan squad.
"It was a good effort on the kids' part," she said.
South Dakota Tech, 6-3 in the conference and 16-7
overall, travels to Jamestown tonight. DSU, 9-3 in the
conference and 17-7 overall, hosts Black Hills State
University this evening.
