Dakota
State began the 2005-06 season with two quality efforts
against the University of Sioux Falls and Mount Marty
College. The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC)
foes are also the opening two games of the season for
the Lady T's so this gave all three squads a thorough
scouting report before their upcoming non-conference
games.
The two
foes
brought distinctly different styles of play to the
scrimmage games. USF used a very physical style of
play that made Dakota State work hard for their inside
position. They were also very aggressive fighting
through screens and denying cutters. This physical
play wore down the Lady T's and USF was able to dominate
the offensive boards the second half.
Mount
Marty was not as physical as USF but they are an
extremely quick team that matches up full-court and gets
after you from minute one to the final second.
They are very quick at all five positions and overplay
the passing lanes very well, forcing turnovers.
Offensively, they shoot the ball well from the perimeter
and are constantly moving without the ball. They
did a great job of attacking our match-up zone and
making us think.
Overall,
I thought we did some things pretty well. We did a
pretty good job of running the court. I feel we
did a better job of executing the offense as the day
went on. We got more comfortable with "creating"
offensive opportunities and adapting to what the
defenses were trying to take away from us.
Defensively, we got tired. We were the aggressors
early in each game but lost that aggressiveness as the
game went on. When we got fatigued, we were
satisfied with just guarding our person rather than
really attacking the passing lanes. So, we just
need to get in a little better shape and I think we'll
be alright. The same thing occurred with the
rebounding. We were dominant early in the game but
gave up a lot of boards at both ends as the game
progressed.
We'll get
in a good week of work and get ready for two more
scrimmages on Saturday, Oct. 29th, with Concordia, NE,
and Morningside College of Iowa. Game times are
listed on the "Schedule" page of the Lady T's web site.
