Two of the NAIA's Top 20 women's basketball teams in
preseason went at each other Wednesday in Madison.
When the final buzzer sounded at the DSU
Fieldhouse, No. 17 Northwestern of Orange City, Iowa,
had handed #16 Dakota State University an 81-72 defeat.
Northwestern's Red Raiders kept their perfect season
rolling at 6-0, while the Lady T's mark dipped below
.500 at 2-3.
"I thought both teams played well," said DSU Coach Jeff
Dittman. "Each team was able to score on each other, and
each was able to get to the boards for second shots."
Ironically, Northwestern surged to a 9-0 lead in
the game's first minutes, which was the point spread at
the end of the game.
Behind
the stellar performance of Laura Tewes, DSU got back
into the ballgame and trailed Northwestern by just four
points,
44-40, at halftime.
Tewes, on 5-for-8 field goal shooting and a 12-16 tour
at the charity stripe, poured in 27 points for the game,
and completed a double-double, yanking down 12 rebounds
for the Lady T's.
"Laura had an outstanding game for us in every facet,"
added Dittman. "She scored, did a good job defensively,
and she pulled down those 12 boards, with six of them
being offensive boards."
With five minutes to go in the game, it was tied 58-58.
Northwestern then took charge and nailed down the win.
"For us, the difference in the game was in those
last five minutes," concluded Dittman. "They made plays
and we didn't. Northwestern was able to consistently
score down the stretch, and we had problems finishing
shots."
Even though Tewes got her 27 points, Northwestern's Deb
Remmerde's show was better, snapping in a game-tops 34
points on 10-23 field goal shooting and having a perfect
12-12 night at the line.
The victors also got double-figures scoring from Jamie
Hoegh, Amy Larson and Crystal Algood. Hoegh added 12
points and Larson and Algood each had 10.
Northwestern had a 26-23 field goals made advantage and
a slim 28-27 points edge at the free throw line over the
Lady T's. In addition to
Tewes' scoring splurge, Jill Hansen added 12 points and
Angela Carr had 10.
Northwestern and DSU played the boards on almost even
terms. The Red Raiders
claimed 42 rebounds, including 17 offensive nabs, led by
Algood's and Hoegh's twin 8-rebound games. Larson and
Remmerde had seven rebounds apiece.
The Lady T's had 41 rebounds, with 19 coming on offense.
Jessica VanLoy added eight rebounds and Sara Nelson
seven to Tewes' effort.
DSU's next action comes Friday and Saturday in the
Presentation College-Super 8 Classic at Aberdeen.
