A come-from-behind scoring run was needed by Dakota
State University in the final five minutes Saturday to
post a 63-61 win over Presentation College. The Lady
Trojans earned a 2-0 record in the Super Eight Classic
in Aberdeen.
"This was a very good win for us against a quality
team," said DSU Coach Jeff Dittman, whose team raised
its mark to 4-3. "I would have liked to have seen us
play better defense down the stretch, but Presentation
really gave us some match-up
problems."
On Friday in first-round action, the Lady T's had little
trouble dispatching the University of Minnesota-Morris
82-59. "We started off a
little slow against UMM, but got our fast break going
and were able to open up an 18-point, 50-32, lead by
halftime."
Lady T's 63, PC 61
Even
though the Lady T's came from behind in the second half
Saturday, Presentation outscored the Lady T's 40-29 in
the game's final 20 minutes.
With 14 seconds left in the game and the score tied at
61-all, Jessica VanLoy missed a 3-point shot, but Maria
Gengler grabbed the rebound and put up the winning
basket. Gengler ended up
as the game's high scorer with 22 points.
"We got a very solid performance from Maria with her 22
points and five blocked shots," added Dittman.
Earlier, the Lady T's had forged a 13-point,
34-21, halftime cushion.
"We had a pretty good first half on defense," said
Dittman. "We were able to hold them to 21 points with
very few fast-break or second-chance points. In the
second half, Presentation had us back on our heels until
the last five minutes. We were
not the aggressors."
In addition to Gengler's 22 points, the Lady T's got 11
more points from VanLoy, eight by Tricia Boldt and six
apiece from Jill Hansen and Laura Tewes.
DSU had 25-for-56 field goal shooting, along with
a 10-13 team effort from the free throw line.
Gengler had seven of the Lady T's 40 rebounds, while
Boldt added six rebounds.
VanLoy had five rebounds, four assists and two
blocked shots. Angela Carr also had four assists.
Presentation, which shot 21-54 from the field and 14-21
at the charity stripe, got double-figures scoring from
Callie Antonen, Holly Vogel, Bobbi Jo Bishop and Amy
Schilling. Antonen and
Vogel each had 15 points, Bishop added 13 and Schilling
12. Bishop and
Darcy Fulhaber each had four rebounds.
Lady T's 82, UMM 59
DSU surged to its 50-32
first-half-ending lead on 60-percent 18-of-30 shooting
and then held its own in the second half to down Morris.
Leading the Lady T's on offense was Gengler with
a 15-point performance, followed by Hansen and Tewes
with 13-point displays. Sara Nelson completed DSU's
double-digit scoring with an
11-point game.
"The only disappointment was our defensive rebounding,"
said Dittman. "We gave up 19 offensive boards to Morris.
We have been lacking in this phase of the game for the
past three contests, so we will have to get back to
practice and fix this weakness in our game."
DSU had a 49-42 rebound edge over the Lady Cougars, with
Gengler and Tewes each claiming seven rebounds and
VanLoy with six.
UMM was led by Tynell Kocer, who had 11 points, and
Malinda Berglund with her seven rebounds.
Jamie Raimey also contributed nine points and
Berglund seven.
DSU stays on the road Tuesday, facing Martin Luther
College in New Ulm, Minn.
