Dakota State University's Lady Trojans literally broke
away from Jamestown College while playing stingy defense
Thursday, posting a conference season-opening 61-52 win.
Taking a very early 1-0 lead over the rest of the
Dakota Athletic Conference, the Lady T's reeled off
their fourth-straight win of the season, lifting DSU's
overall mark to 6-3.

"The difference in the game for us was our
transition baskets," said DSU Coach Jeff Dittman.
"We got 12 fastbreak points, and that helped us
build a 10-point lead early in the second half."
DSU had a razor-thin 25-24 lead at halftime,
but with its 12-1 fastbreak
points advantage over the Jimmies, the Lady
T's manufactured a 45-35 lead at one point midway
into the second half.
Leading DSU's surge was sophomore guard Jill Hansen,
who put up many of her game-high 16 points from the
perimeter in shooting 6-for-14 from the field.
While Hansen was doing her handiwork from the
outside, Laura Tewes, DSU's 6-foot-2 sophomore
forward paced DSU's inside game. |

"We outscored them 34-22 in the paint, so our post
players were effective inside for us," added Dittman.
Junior 6-2 center Sara Nelson collected six
points and Jessica VanLoy, a sophomore forward/guard,
got eight from the post positions.
Jamestown (4-4, 0-1) entered Thursday's game as the
conference's second-ranked defense, giving up 57 points
a game. DSU was third, allowing just 60.
"Both of these teams play outstanding defense, so it's
no surprise that points were hard to come by Thursday,"
said Dittman. "I thought we did a great job defending
their 3-point shooters and keeping them from getting
transition baskets. That's how
they beat us last year."
Many times, Jamestown got just one-shot chances at the
basket.
DSU enjoyed a 26-18 field goals made edge over the
Jimmies and outscored them 12-6 at the free throw line.
Angela Carr added nine points for DSU and Maria
Gengler had eight.
Each team swiped 39 rebounds, with Nelson claiming a
game-high 10 caroms. Gengler and Tewes each added seven.
Jamestown's top scorer was Amanda Rantapaa, who had 14
points. Lindsey Ness tacked on 12.
Megan Clark also scored seven points, and Brietta
Bowerman and Desiree Michels added six apiece.
Ness was Jamestown's top rebounder, garnering
nine rebounds. Bowerman and Michels each had six.
With the Lady T's win Thursday, they evened the lifetime
series between the two teams at 6-6.
DSU's next action comes Sunday in Bemidji, Minn.,
against nonconference foe Bemidji State University, an
NCAA Div. II team. Jamestown
also plays its next game
Saturday against Bemidji.
On Friday (tonight), other DAC teams
start conference play. Valley City State visits Black
Hills State in Spearfish, Mayville State is in Rapid
City taking on S.D. Tech.
