Dakota State University's 16th-ranked Lady Trojans (2-2) and Rocky Mountain College both played tough defense Saturday in the Minot (N.D.) Women's Basketball Classic, but the Lady T's came home with a 54-42 win.  DSU rebounded from an 80-62 loss on Friday to Carroll College, which entered the Minot Classic as the NAIA's No. 10-rated team.

Saturday, DSU and Rocky Mountain made less than 50 field goal shots.  DSU, however, had a 6-2 edge in 3-point shooting and a 14-11 scoring advantage from the charity stripe to forge the win.  DSU went 18-49 from the field. Rocky Mountain was limited to 16-48 field goal shooting.

The Lady Trojans more than doubled up the scoring of RMC in the first half, taking a 33-16 halftime lead into their dressing room.

"We did a good job in the first half in all three phases of the game," said DSU Coach Jeff Dittman. "We held Rocky Mountain to only 16 points, gave up only two offensive rebounds and hit 46 percent of our shots."

Rocky Mountain tried coming back on the Lady T's, outscoring DSU
26-21 in the second half, but losing the ballgame by 12 points.

"In the second half, Rocky Mountain picked up their intensity and we didn't match it," added Dittman. "They closed the game to within eight points before we were able to put the game away."

DSU got 11 points and seven rebounds from 6-foot-2 junior center Sara Nelson, who went 5-7 in field goal shooting.  Jessica VanLoy and Laura Tewes also had nine points each.  Tewes had 11 rebounds to help DSU to a decided 41-24 edge over Rocky Mountain.   Nelson and VanLoy each had two steals as the Lady T's forced 22 RMC turnovers.

Rocky Mountain got 13 game-high points from Josie Evans and 12 from Stephanie Neubauer. Evans had five rebounds and Neubauer and Alyssa Brown each had four.

                   Carroll 80, DSU 62

Carroll built up a 42-29 halftime edge Friday and never let the Lady T's get any closer.  Carroll outgunned DSU 29-21 in field goals, including a decided 9-1 edge in 3-point successes, and outscored DSU 19-13 at the free throw line.

"They shot the ball extremely well from beyond the 3-point line in the first half," said Dittman. "We started matching basket for basket the first 10 minutes of the game before they went on a 14-0 scoring run to open up the game at 30-16."

Carroll was led by Emily Woody and Jolene Fuzesy, who had 15-point outings. Carly Severson added 13 points and Danielle Maloney 10.  Amy Brooks had eight of Carroll's 40 rebounds.

DSU got double-figures scoring from Tewes, VanLoy and Angie Carr, who had respective 17-, 14- and 10-point performances.  VanLoy completed a double-double night, hauling in 13 of the Lady T's 44 rebounds. Tewes also had nine rebounds.  Maria Gengler also added two blocked shots for DSU.

"Overall, we played a pretty good game. I was pleased with the way we started the game and the way we kept battling," said Dittman. "We did an excellent job on the offensive boards, pulling down 19 offensive rebounds, but we gave up way too many second-chance points to Carroll."

The Lady T's have a three-game slate next week, starting with a match-up of "Top Twenty" teams on Tuesday.

Dakota State will host Northwestern College, currently ranked No. 17 in the NAIA, with varsity play beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.

On Friday and Saturday, the Lady T's play in the women's portion of the Presentation-Super 8 Classic at Aberdeen. The Lady T's take on the University of Minnesota-Morris at 2 p.m. Friday and then play host-school Presentation College Saturday at 4 p.m.

Assessing the play of the Lady T's after the first four games of the season, Coach Dittman had this to say:  "We have to get our offense going. We are turning the ball over too much and not shooting a good enough field goal percentage.  Defensively, we have to be more consistent. We have periods in which we thoroughly dominate a team, but then we relax and let them come back on us.  Our rebounding has been excellent to date and we'll have to keep that up if we want to compete with the quality teams we have on our schedule."
