Dakota State clinched at least
a tie for the DAC women's basketball title with a 78-67
win over Black Hills State on Saturday.
The Lady Trojans, 10-3 in conference play and 18-7
overall, have one game remaining against Jamestown
College on Feb. 16. With the loss, the Lady Yellow
Jackets dropped to 6-4 in the conference and 12-12
overall.
"We just dug ourselves a hole the first half," BHSU
coach Mark Nore said. "We just played on our heels and
didn't look to attack and play with our assertiveness."
Nore said that a five-hour bus trip the night before
from Jamestown, N. D. after playing a really intense
game against Jamestown College also had an effect on the
women's performance. However, he also credited DSU.
"They really brought it," he said. "They played really
physically. I thought they handled things down the
stretch. Give them credit. They are a good ball club."
For coach Jeff Dittman's Lady Trojans, it was a tale of
two halves. "The first half we really dominated. Our
defense did a great job forcing them to shoot tough
shots. We didn't give them any second shots," he said.
"Offensively, I thought we ran the ball very well. We
did a tremendous job on the offensive boards and got a
lot of second shots. It seemed to really take the life
out of BHSU.
"In the second half, they were definitely the
aggressor," he added. "We had a stretch of seven or
eight minutes where we were trying not to lose instead
of taking it strong to the hole. We looked kind of young
the second half. Overall we held a great first half and
held off a charge that they made in the second half. The
last two minutes we made plays down the stretch to
secure the win."
Angela Carr led the Lady Trojans with 22 points. Laura
Tewes had 12 points and Angie Gottsleben added 11
points. Sara Nelson had seven rebounds to lead DSU in
that category.
For the Yellow Jackets, Becca Walters scored 16 points,
Jaime Bentley and Jill Thomas each had 11 points and
Brittney Klipfel had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Nore said that if his team can play with the intensity
they played in the second half against DSU there aren't
a lot of teams that will beat BHSU. "It comes down to
doing those little things and playing with that same
intensity for 40 minutes. That's the challenging part of
this thing," he said
