Dakota State University temporarily enhanced its No. 20
ranking in the NAIA Division II women's basketball
standings by handing Valley City State a 74-69 loss
Friday. But, Saturday, the Lady T's were upset by
Mayville State 77-66.
The weekend split in North Dakota left Coach Jeff
Dittman's Lady T's at 14-7 overall and 7-4 in the DAC-10
heading into their home stand against S.D. Tech this
Friday and Black Hills State Saturday at the DSU
Fieldhouse. Saturday will also be Parent's Night
for the Lady T's.
Friday, the Lady T's surged to a 39-24 halftime edge
only to have Valley City State (9-10, 4-7) outscore them
45-35 in the second half. A key to that run was an
injury to freshman forward Jessica VanLoy early in the
second half. "We were playing well and was close
to opening up a twenty point lead when Jess landed oddly
on a steal and crumpled to the ground," said Coach
Dittman. "When I got to her, she told me she heard
a pop and I knew she wasn't going to be playing for
awhile."
From that point on, Valley City began their run that got
them to within three points of the Lady T's with two
minutes to play. But, a key twelve foot jumper by
Ashlei Fawbush and freethrows down the stretch helped
the Lady T's hang onto the road win.
Angie Carr and Renae Bottum topped the Lady T's scorers
with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Maria Gengler
and Sara Nelson were close behind with eight points
apiece, and Jessica VanLoy and Stacy Dunklau each had
seven as the Lady T's shot 25-for-53 from the field,
including a 5-11 showing beyond the 3-point line.
DSU earned a 33-30 rebound edge over Valley City with
Dunklau, VanLoy, Sandy Smith and Laura Tewes each
claiming six rebounds. In their first meeting, a
win for Valley City, VCSU had a four rebound edge over
the Lady T's.
Valley City's offensive sparks were Loni Hall, Janae
Larson and Nicolle James, who had 26, 24, and 14 points,
respectively, as the Lady T's limited Valley City to
just 19-48 field goal shooting. The Lady Vikes,
though, outscored DSU 26-19 at the charity stripe.
Hall had 12 rebounds and James had 11.
Mayville 77, #20 DSU 66
Saturday, DSU's trio of double-figure scorers - Malvin,
Dunklau, and Gengler - were no match for Mayville's
quintet of double-digit scorers. Steph Megger led
the winners with a tilt-top 17 points, followed by Kelly
Latozke and Fardowsa Ahmed. Jessica Hagen and
Cassie Leraas each had 10 points for Mayville.
"We
didn't play defense well enough to win on the road,"
said Dittman. "Mayville was able to score inside,
outside, on second shots, and in transition. We
didn't slow them down a bit which is disappointing since
we had already beaten them twice this season by
double-figures. I hope we learned a lesson tonight
and that lesson being that if you want to compete for
championships, your defense has to always be solid."
Malvin
arched in 12 points to pace the Lady T's attack, while
Dunklau and Gengler each had 11. The Lady T's,
however, had a 41-36 edge in rebounding with Gengler
hauling in 10 rebounds and Dunklau eight.
Latozke topped all rebounders, yanking down 16 boards to
complete her own double-double.
