Andrea Gullickson's 18 points, DSU surged to a
seven-point, 60-53, win over Northwestern Iowa in
the DSU Fieldhouse. It was the Red Raiders' first
game of the season.
"I started out
slow," said Gullickson, a 5-foot-10 junior
forward from Flandreau. "But, after Hali got
hurt, I kind of forgot about that and tried to
concentrate on how I could help our team get through
the game."
DSU (2-0) trailed
Northwestern, which was ranked #19 in the NAIA's
preseason women's basketball poll, 25-23, at
halftime. The Lady T's then staged a 37-28
scoring run to start Northwestern out on a losing
note.
"I was very pleased
with the way we competed in this game," added
DSU Coach Jeff Dittman. "With the injury to
Hali McClelland early in the first half, and Ashlei
Fawbush, who suffered a knee injury late in the
game, we had to play a number of people out of
position. Our defense was outstanding against a
quality team, limiting them to 53 points and only
34-percent shooting from the field."
DSU, outgunned 21-19 in
field goals by the Red Raiders, won the game at the
charity stripe, especially in the second half.
The Lady T's went 19-for-24 at the free throw line
in the game's final 20 minutes, figuring heavily in
their 22-28 display for the game. Northwestern
turned the ball over 30 times to the Lady T's 31.
Gullickson's game-high 18
points came on her 8-11 field goal shooting and a
perfect 4-4 at the charity stripe. Lindsey
Binger and Robin Grinager also stepped up their
efforts, contributing 10 points each. They were
followed closely by Amber Malvin and Fawbush with
eight points apiece.
The Lady T's earned a
three-rebound, 38-35, edge over Northwestern,
getting nine rebounds from Grinager, six by Renae
Bottum and five apiece from Malvin and Sara Nelson.
Northwestern got a double-double
17-point, 10-rebound performance by Jaime Woudstra,
while Lindsay Kropf added 12 counters and Mary
Kummerfeld 10.
According to Dittman,
McClelland is not practicing this week, and her
appearance in Thursday's game will be a game-time
decision. Fawbush's knee was to be diagnosed
Monday, but Dittman noted that she will be out for
an indefinite time.
