Dakota State
University's Lady Trojans almost staged an upset of
the University of Mary, the DAC-10's top team, but
came up short 72-68 Saturday in the DSU Fieldhouse.
On Friday, the Lady T's were defeated 57-51 by
Jamestown College.

DSU had a 28-26 haltime edge over Mary, but then Mary went on a 46-40
second-half scoring run to nail down the win. "This was one
of our best games of the year," said DSU Coach Jeff Dittman.
"We had great intensity and concentration throughout the
game. I thought our defense did a very good job against one of the
best scoring teams in the country."
Amber
Malvin was DSU's only double-figure scorer, netting 15 points.
Sara Nelson and Hali McClelland added eight points apiece, followed
closely by Renae Bottum with seven and Lindsey Binger and Sandy Smith
each with six. |

Mary got 20 points by Sarah Leer, while Jessica
Zundel and Molly Merrigan added 14- and 12-point
outings. Mary outrebounded the Lady T's 48-36
with Zundel claiming 16 rebounds. DSU had a
28-27 field goal edge over Mary, but the winners
outscored the Lady T's 26-17 at the free throw line.
"The key again was rebounding," added
Dittman. "Mary pulled down 17 offensive
rebounds for key second shots. Mary also got
to the free throw line 24 times in the second half
and they are an excellent free throw shooting
team." Amber Zephier and McClelland had
eight rebounds apiece for the Lady T's.

DSU forged an 8-2 game-opening scoring run,
but Jamestown posted a 36-16 scoring run to
end first-half play, giving the Jimmies a
28-24 cushion. In the second half, DSU
limited Jamestown to just four points in the
first 11:30 but the Jimmies
survived.
"We dug ourselves a hole in the first
half," admitted Dittman.
"The second half featured an
outstanding job of defending by our
team." Andrea Gullickson had 14
points for DSU, 11 by McClelland, eight from
Bottom and seven by Nelson. |

Jamestown outgunned DSU 29-25 in field goals,
including an 8-5 edge in 3's. For the Jimmies,
Amanda Sethen had 15 points, Nicole Nold 10 and
Jenna Wolf nine. Jamestown also had a 51-31
rebound edge over the Lady T's. Nold and
Sethen each had seven rebounds for the winners,
while McClelland had eight and Zephier seve for the
Lady T's.
DSU (11-17 overall and 6-12 in the conference loop)
now plays the University of Mary (26-2, 17-1) in
first-round DAC-10 Playoff action Tuesday in
Bismarck, N.D.
