Dakota State University's Lady Trojans trailed by just
eight points at halftime but Dakota Wesleyan University
staged a 48-27 second-half scoring surge and dumped DSU
91-62 college women's basketball loss Tuesday in
Mitchell. Dakota Wesleyan capitalized on the
double-figure scoring of Victoria Drefs, Tracey Faulhaber,
Kara Overwag, Jenny Bridge and Abby DeWolf to hand the
Lady T's the loss.
Drefs paced DWU's balanced
scoring with 19 points, followed closely by Faulhaber with
17. Overwag added 14 points and DeWolf and Bridge had
12-point games. DWU's Lady Tigers outgunned the Lady
T's 37-20 in field goals, including a 14-2 advantage in
making three-pointers, which impressed Jeff Dittman, DSU's
head coach.
"Dakota Wesleyan shot the
eyes out of the basket from long range," said Dittman.
"We did a pretty good job of matching their inside
play, but they hit 14 three-pointers and that was the
game. I was very impressed with the number of shooters
they had on the perimeter. I expected a couple of their
guards to shoot it well, but they had seven players that
hit at least one long-range shot."

For the Lady T's, Hali McClelland
tied Drefs for game-high scoring honors with 19
points. DSU's other double-digit scorers were Sara
Nelson and Andrea Gullickson, who had respective 13- and
11-point displays.
"Our inside game played
pretty well," added Dittman. "All three
front-line players scored in double figures with Hali
leading the way. Our team did a good job of attacking the
Wesleyan defense, getting to the free throw line for 26
free throws." The Lady T's were 20-26 in free
throw shooting, including Malvin's 8-8 tour at the charity
stripe.
"That helped us stay in the
game for about 33 minutes," concluded Dittman. "DWU
made one final run down the stretch that we couldn't
match."
Dakota Wesleyan earned a 33-22
rebound edge over the Lady T's, with Faulhaber claiming
seven caroms. DSU got seven rebounds from Gullickson.
DSU hosts the Security Bank
Tournament this weekend. The Lady T's close out Friday's
first-round action at 8 p.m., taking on Martin Luther
College. At 6 p.m., the University of
Wisconsin-Superior faces Mount Mercy College. The
consolation game will be played at 1:00 on Saturday with
the championship game to follow at 3:00.
