Dakota State
University's Lady Trojan hoopsters managed to
pound out an 88-84 win Friday against South Dakota
Tech, which was ranked 24th in the nation in the
NAIA Div. II poll, but couldn't maintain that
momentum Saturday, dropping a 75-62 decision on
the Fieldhouse hard wood to Black Hills State
University. Now, Coach Jeff Dittman's Lady
T's will pit their 16-9 overall and 9-6 DAC-10
marks up against Huron University Thursday.
Lady
T's 88, Tech 84
The Lady T's saw an early-game lead evaporate in
the latter stages of the first half in which S.D.
Tech came out on top 40-38 at the halftime
buzzer. In the game's final 20 minutes, the
Lady T's put on a 50-44 scoring run to nail down
the four-point win.
"This was an
outstanding game between two teams that were both
playing well," said Dittman. "Tech is
leading the conference in scoring and we were
never able to get any control defensively. It
wasn't that either team played badly on defense;
it was just a case of both teams executing their
offense and making plays."
Hali McClelland spearheaded DSU's offense, going
7-13 from the field and 8-10 at the free throw
line, to account for a team-high 23 points.
Amy Balk and Jessica
Honermann had a pair of 14-point displays and
Mandy Kruger tacked on 10 to round out DSU's
double-figure scoring.
Even though Tech
outgunned DSU 30-26 in field goals made, the Lady
T's had a decided 10-5 edge in scoring from beyond
the 3-point arc.
Tech got a 24-point
game-high points from Miaken Zeigler, who went
10-20 from the field. Cori Leis added 17 points,
and Stacie Vedvei added 11.
Off the boards, the Lady
T's outrebounded Tech 31-27 with Jennie Sonne
grabbing seven caroms and McClelland and Honermann
each having six. Tech got six rebounds from
Quinn Godecke and four apiece from Leis and Jamie
Zilles.
BHSU
75, Lady T's 62
On Saturday, Black Hills State surged to a
13-point, 38-25, halftime lead and then played the
Lady T's on even 37-37 scoring terms in the second
half to preserve the win.
"The first eight
minutes of the game was a nightmare," stated
Dittman. "We couldn't slow them down at all
defensively and we panicked at the offensive end.
So, with about 12 minutes left in the first half,
we were down 33-8. We managed to cut the lead to
10 in the first half and then to seven in the
second half, but spotting a team 25 points is just
too much to overcome."
The Lady T's were sparked by 14-point games from
Sonne and McLelland , while Kruger tacked on
12 tallies and Balk added 10.
Black Hills State got 16
tilt-top tallies by Amanda Mortenson, 15 more by
Joni Lunney and 11 by Darcy Reinicke as the Lady
Yellow Jackets had a 26-22 field goal success edge
over DSU.
In rebounding, BHSU had a
33-30 edge over the Lady T's, getting eight from
Lunney and six more by Heather Combs. The
Lady T's got nine rebounds from Sonne, eight by
McClelland and seven from Honermann. Balk
also had six assists and five steals in the
contest.
