Lady T's Nick #7 Northwestern Again

Dakota State University's Lady Trojans, for the second time in a dozen nights, dished out a loss to No. 7-ranked Northwestern, beating the Red Raiders 66-57.  On Nov. 15 at Sioux Falls, the Lady T's beat Northwestern an 85-62 in the USF Classic. The only losses Northwestern (4-2) have suffered have been to DSU.

"This was a great road win for us Tuesday," said Jeff Dittman. "We did a good job defensively all night, and had a lot of people contribute to the win. With some early foul trouble and a couple of our athletes sick with colds, we needed a lot of help from our bench -- and got it."

Leading the Lady T's reserves were Molly Hathaway and Andrea Gullickson, who gave DSU some quality minutes, according to Dittman. They scored nine of the Lady T's 66 points and claimed six of the winners' 41 rebounds.

The Lady T's offense was spearheaded by Amy Balk's stellar 20-point performance, which was supported by Hali McClelland with 12 tallies and Jessica Honermann with 11 points and seven team-leading rebounds.

DSU and Northwestern each bucketed 23 field goals, but the Lady T's outscored the Red Raiders 18-8 in free throw successes, due in large part to Balk's 12-14 showing at the charity stripe.

Northwestern got double-figures scoring from Carli Blom, Jamie Woudstra and Heather Block, who had respective 16-, 13- and 10-point outings.

"Northwestern went ahead 51-50 with about six minutes to play," added Dittman. "But, we outscored them 16-6 down the stretch with a combination of good execution, a couple of key offensive rebounds and free throw shooting. Amy was 8-8 from the free throw line in the last three minutes to secure the win for us."

Even though the Lady T's had a 41-39 rebound edge over Northwestern, the Red Raiders produced 19 offensive rebounds, which concerned Dittman.  "Our biggest weakness tonight was keeping Northwestern off the offensive boards," said Dittman. "They got a number of second shots."

Honermann led the Lady T's rebounding with seven grabs, while Erin Nielsen had six and Jennie Sonne five. Woudstra claimed seven rebounds and Lindsey Kropf six for Northwestern.

DSU is the host school for the Security Bank Tournament, which will be played Saturday and Sunday at the DSU Fieldhouse.  Saturday's action begins at 6 p.m. with Doane College taking on Mayville State University, followed by the Lady T's-Mt. Marty College contest at 8 p.m.  The third-place game Sunday begins at 1 p.m., followed by the championship at 3.
