Jennie Sonne (54) gets by Doane's Amanda Creighton for a field goal attempt for her Lady T's in their 75-66 win over Doane College on the DSU Fieldhouse floor.
Doane College gave Dakota State University's Lady Trojans a three-point wake-up call in the first half of Sunday's Security Bank Tournament championship game, and the Lady T's responded with a crisp second half of play.

Trailing 38-35, the Lady T's staged a 40-28 second-half scoring and defensive show to down Doane 75-66 to win the tournament title.

"The championship game was an outstanding contest," said Jeff Dittman, Dakota State's head coach. "Doane played very well, but we were able to make some plays down the stretch that gave us the win.

"We were battling some illness, but I thought our athletes did a great job of digging down and finding the `extra' we needed to win the tournament. We also got some outstanding contributions from our bench again. We needed our entire team tonight, and everyone came through for us."

Mt. Marty earned third-place honors earlier Sunday, defeating Mayville State 84-75. Doane, on Saturday, put Mayville State into consolation-bracket play by handing the Comets a 93-86 loss.

The Lady T's championship win Sunday, coupled with their 66-56 victory over Mt. Marty College in Saturday's opening round, gives DSU a 6-2 mark heading into their regular Dakota Athletic Conference slate, which begins Thursday against the University of Mary.

"After a very difficult preseason, we are looking forward to taking this momentum into the conference openers this weekend with the University of Mary and Jamestown College," added Dittman.  Mary was the preseason pick to win the DAC-10 Conference and is 7-2 thus far this season.

SUNDAY
Lady T's 75, Doane 66

DSU threw a balanced-scoring offense against Doane, with Amy Balk, Jennie Sonne, Hali McClelland and Jessica Honermann all having double-digit scoring.

Balk paced the Lady T's with 14 points, followed by Sonne with 13, McClelland 12 and Honermann 10, which figured heavily into the Lady T's 25-58 field-goal and 22-30 free throw shooting figures.  McClelland also had four steals and Balk eight assists to help DSU to its win.

Off the boards, the Lady T's outrebounded Doane 44-31 with Sonne completing a double-double performance with 10 rebounds. Honermann also had eight rebounds and McClelland six.

"Jennie gave us another strong performance in the post and Amy led a balanced scoring attack that had four players in double figures," added Dittman.  McClelland, Honermann, Amber Malvin, Ashlie Fawbush were also cited for their play.

Doane (6-4), which went 27-62 from the field and just 9-11 at the charity stripe, got 18 tilt-tops points from Kate Reeson. Amanda Creighton added 15 tallies and Amanda Hanzlik 11.  Nicky White also had seven assists and Hanzlik three steals for Doane.

Mt. Marty 84, Mayville 75

Mayville (4-3) clung to a slim 37-36 halftime edge against Mt. Marty (6-3), but couldn't maintain it in the second half as the Lady Lancers had a 48-38 scoring run to nail down the win.

Mt. Marty got 20 game-high points by Eliza Leloux, followed by Erin Case and Emily Johnsen, who each had 13. Kylee White contributed 12 and Mandy Carlson 11.

SATURDAY
Lady T's 66, Mt. Marty 56

Balk's 15-point performance led four Lady T's into double-figures scoring territory. Honermann cashed in 11 counters, while Erin Nielsen and Amber Malvin each had 10 as DSU outgunned Mt. Marty 20-17 in field goals and outscored the Lady Lancers 18-17 at the free throw line.

DSU also had a slim 40-38 rebound advantage over Mt. Marty with Sonne claiming seven rebounds. McClelland, Balk and Nielsen each had six.  Honermann garnered three steals and Balk had five assists.

"Our defense was excellent, especially in the first half when we held Mt. Marty to 23 points. We also did an excellent job of controlling the boards. We were able to pick up 17 offensive rebounds and that gave us a number of second-chance points. Erin was especially tough on the offensive boards.

"Offensively, we did a great job of executing and reading the defense. We had the opportunity to score more, had we hit some fastbreak layups, but we moved the ball around and used all the scoring options in our offense."

Dittman cited the play of Balk, Honermann, Sonne and Malvin as key players in this game.

Mt. Marty got 16 points from LeLouz and 11 more by Carlson. Leloux also had nine rebounds and Carlson seven.

Doane 93, Mayville 86

She was joined as all-tournament selections by Mt. Marty's Leloux, Mayville's Eliason, Doane's Reeson and Sonne from DSU.
