Lady T's Sunk By Mount Marty

Mount Marty College (MMC) put the ball into the hole better than Dakota State University did Sunday, leading to MMC's 71-60 non-conference women's basketball win over the Lady T's at Yankton.  MMC got the win by outgunning the Lady T's 8-2 in 3-point field goals and 24-22 overall, winning the rebounds battle 32-27 and outscoring DSU 15-14 at the charity stripe.

The Lady T's record dipped to 9-4.

"Mount Marty did the things they needed to do to beat us," said Jeff Dittman, DSU's head coach. "They shot the ball well, particularly from the three-point line (going 8 for 12). They controlled the boards, grabbing 12 offensive rebounds and limiting us to only seven."

More importantly, Mount Marty pounced on the Lady T's early, forging a 42-32 lead by the end of the first half.

"We were always, with the exception of the first four minutes of the game, playing catch-up basketball," added Dittman. "I thought we did a good job defensively in the second half, holding them to 29 points. But, our defense did not control the game in the first half, and we allowed Mount Marty to put 42 points on the board."

DSU got a team-tops 12 points from Jessica Honermann, 11 tallies each from Amy Balk and Hali McClelland, and 10 from Jennie Sonne.  They played a vital part in DSU's 22-46 field goal shooting, which included a 2-11 showing in 3's. The Lady T's, though, were just 14-23 at the charity stripe.

"We shot the ball well the entire game, going 46 percent from the field," said Dittman. "But, we need to shoot better from the three-point line and at the free throw line."

McClelland had six rebounds and four assists and Honermann added three steals for the Lady T's.

Mount Marty's offense was sparked by Mandy Carlson, who had 14 points. Kylee White had 12 tallies, eight rebounds and six assists for the Lady Lancers.  MMC also got a pair of 11-point games from Eliza Leloux and Tricia Lewison, helping Mount Marty to 24-49 field goal shooting, along with a 15-24 effort at the free throw line.

DSU re-enters Dakota Athletic Conference play Thursday, hosting Valley City State University in a 6 p.m. contest at the DSU Fieldhouse. Sunday, DSU hosts Mayville State in another DAC-10 6 p.m. ballgame Sunday at 6:00.
