In a showdown
between NAIA Div. II women's basketball powers, Dickinson
State, ranked eighth, out-muscled 15th-rated Dakota State
University 68-44 Saturday in Dickinson, N.D. DSU's
Lady Trojans (9-3) carried a six-game win string into
Dickinson, having beating Minot State decisively 71-58 the
previous night. Dickinson and DSU were unbeaten 3-0
in DAC-10 play prior to Saturday's ballgame.
Crippled by a 1-for-9 field goal
shooting start, the Lady Trojans found themselves in a
35-17 hole at halftime and Dickinson never let DSU back
into the contest.
"If we would have hit those
shots, I think it could have been a different game,"
said Jeff Dittman, DSU's head coach. "But, after the
first four minutes, Dickinson turned its defense up
another notch and held us to just 17 field goals for the
game. Dickinson had, by far, the toughest defense we have
played against this year."
The Lady T's were led by Amy
Balk's 11-point display, which was supported by Erin
Nielsen's seven counters, six more by Hali McClelland and
five from Jessica Honermann. DSU was just 17-61 from
the field and 3-5 at the free throw line.
Dickinson State got 20 tilt-tops
tallies by Sara Berglund and 13 more from Stacie Schorsch
as the winners went 26-47 from the field and 9-14 at the
charity stripe.

T's 71, Minot 58
In Friday's game, DSU rushed to a 36-23 halftime end and
maintained that offensive pace in the second half.
"We had three good scoring
runs in this game," said Dittman. "We started
the game with an 8-0 lead and kept that margin until Minot
got within four points, 18-14, with about six minutes left
in the half. We then finished the half with a 17-4 run
that put us up by double digits at the half. With
about seven minutes left in the game, we had another run
that put us up by 20 points and secured the win for
us."
DSU got balanced scoring from
McClelland, Balk, Mandy Kruger and Jennie Sonne who had,
respectively, 15-, 14-, 13- and 12-point
performances. More importantly, according to Dittman,
was his team's rebounding as the Lady T's had a 41-31 edge
in that department.
"We were able to get a
number of second shots and held Minot to only eight
offensive boards," he added. Sonne had nine rebounds
and Nielsen and Honermann each had six.
Minot got 14 points from Shanna
Mazurek, 13 more by Lyndal Sundahl and 12 by LeeAnn
Pekovitch.
