The Dakota State
University Lady Trojan's stifling defense came into play
again Friday when they shut down Martin Luther College,
earning a 63-31 win in New Ulm, Minn. It was the
second straight outing for Jeff Dittman's Lady T's in
which they held an opponent to under 40 points.
"Our defense was outstanding again," siad
Dittman. "After the two games last weekend
(which were losses), we went into each practice committed
to get back on track defensively. The work paid off
as we gave up only 35 points to Huron University and 31 to
Martin Luther."
DSU's "D" helped get the ball in the hands of
Mandy Kruger, who snapped in 14 points, and Jennie Sonne,
who added 11 as DSU created a decided 24-12 advantage over
MLC in field goal successes. Amber Malvin and Amy
Balk had eight-point games for the Lady T's, while Jessica
Honermann and Renae Bottum each had seven. The Lady
T's also outscored Martin Luther 11-6 at the free throw
line.
"Offensively, we again made some improvement,"
added Dittman. "We were a little more patient
and made the extra pass a lot of times. Our shooting
percentage (24-of-64 in this game) needs to be better, but
we got good shots again... I think we are getting back to
doing what made us successful in the early part of the
season."
DSU outrebounded their hosts 50-43 with Sonne and Hali
McClelland each yanking down nine rebounds.
Emma Babinec was Martin Luther's only double-figure
scorer, garnering 14 points, as MLC went just 12-59 from
the field. Sarah Gronholz topped Martin Luther's
rebounders, swiping 10 caroms in the contest, and Bethany
Bauer had four assists in the game.
DSU takes its 12-7 overall record and 5-4 log into DAC-10
play this weekend when the Lady T's host Dickinson State
Friday and Minot State Saturday in the DSU Fieldhouse.
Both games tip off at 6 p.m.
