Dakota State University's Lady Trojans
took a commanding lead in the first few
minutes of the game against Jamestown
Wednesday and held on to defeat the Lady
Jimmies 69-52 in first-round DAC action.
"We played great
defense tonight," said Jeff Dittman,
DSU head coach. DSU played Jamestown
last week but suffered a 62-50 loss.
"We allowed
them too many good looks from the
perimeter and they ended up hitting 57
percent from the three-point line,"
Dittman said. "Tonight we matched up
better and got a hand up on a lot of their
shots. We also forced 22 turnovers."
DSU blasted onto
the court, outscoring Jamestown 33-23 in
the first half. While DSU and
Jamestown attempted nearly the same number
of shots, the Lady T's made 42.9 percent
to Jamestown's 20.8 percent. Via the
charity stripe, Jamestown scored 12 points
in the first half vs. DSU with just five.
DSU outscored
Jamestown 36-29 in the second half,
despite the Lady Jimmies' upping their
shooting percentage to 37 percent.
"Offensively, we got a great game
from Amy Balk," Dittman said.
"The defense was sagging off our
perimeter to help their post defense and
Amy, Mandy Kruger and Renae Bottum made
them pay. Amy also had six assists,
most of which came in transition.
She did an excellent job reading the
defense tonight."
Balk led the Lady
T's with 21 points. Hali McClelland
garnered 13 points, Krueger had 10 and
Bottom seven. Kruger brought down
five rebounds and Bottom added
three. McClelland had five assists.
DSU, seeded
#4, faces #8 seed Mayville State Saturday
in the semifinal competition at
Madison. Mayville staged the upset
of the tournament, beating #1-seeded
University of Mary 63-62.
In regular play
during the season, DSU was 1-1 against
Mayville.
Also playing Saturday are #3-seeded South
Dakota Tech and Dickinson State, seeded
#2. Saturday's games begins at 7
