Lady T's Cage Huron University

On a night when Dakota State University's Jennie Sonne and Jessica Honermann both eclipsed the 1,000-point scoring mark, it was the Lady Trojans' defense which shone, putting down Huron University 85-39 at the DSU Fieldhouse.  Coach Jeff Dittman's Lady T's (17-9 overall and 10-6 in the DAC-10) corralled Huron's offense all night, forging a 38-15 first-half ending lead and holding the Screaming Eagles scoreless the first 6 1/2 minutes of the second half.  Huron's record dipped to 3-24 overall and 2-14 in the conference.

"This was a dominant performance by our defense," said Dittman. "We held Huron to 15 points in the first half, then we didn't allow them to score for almost seven minutes of the second half."  DSU limited Huron to just 15-of-51 field goal shooting and 32 rebounds.

Jennie Sonne Jessica Honermann

Sonne collected her 1,000th career point on a fastbreak lay-up early in the game and Honermann got hers at the charity stripe with about 10 minutes left in the second half.  Honermann ended up with a tilt-tops 22 points, while Sonne had 10 and Mandy Kruger 14 as the Lady T's snapped in their field goals at a 27-60 clip.

"We also did a very good job offensively," added Dittman. "In the first half, we shot 55 percent from the field and 100 percent from the three-point line. Jennie and Jessica gave us a great inside game. Hali (McClelland) did a good job getting the ball to them, and Mandy was 3-3 from the three-point arc. We had excellent balance in our offensive attack."

DSU got 44 rebounds, with Honermann claiming seven of those nabs. Sonne and Robin Grinager each had six and Erin Nielsen had five.  McClelland, Amy Balk and Molly Hathaway had four assists apiece, while Honermann and Andrea Gullickson had four steals.

Huron's offense was sparked by Abby Shelske's 13-point display and Kristie Forbes added nine tallies.  Katrice Woods and Sunshine Archambault each had five rebounds and Archambault also had five steals.

DSU closes out its regular season on the road at Jamestown, N.D., next Friday, and at Bismarck next Saturday, playing the University of Mary.
