Dakota State's Molly Hathaway (14) scores two Lady Trojan points, getting by Dakota Wesleyan's Amber DeWolf to get the basket. Hathaway and the Lady T's shocked No. 3-ranked DWU 69-66 Tuesday.
Amy Balk, Jessica Honermann and Jennie Sonne came up big for Dakota State University, helping the Lady T's (now 3-1) stun the No. 3-ranked Lady Tigers 69-66 on the DSU Fieldhouse hardwood.

Balk hit two critical free throws with 8.8 seconds remaining in Tuesday's ballgame, giving her five game points and the Lady Trojans a 69-66 lead. Then Honermann blocked a DWU' 3-point attempt and grabbed the rebound to end the game.

Earlier, Amanda Williams had gotten the Lady Tigers (4-2) to within one point, 66-67, of DSU with a little less that 17 seconds left in the contest, making a pair of free throws.

It took a 39-34 second-half scoring surge by the Lady T's to overtake Dakota Wesleyan.

"I was very proud of the way our team battled back in the first half and then took the lead in the second," said Jeff Dittman, DSU's head coach. "We had opportunities to put the game away in the last five minutes, but you have to give credit to DWU. They never let up with their intensity. This was another quality win for us against a great team."

The Lady Tigers controlled the game early in the first half, earning almost double-digit leads at various stages of the game's first 20 minutes.  "Dakota Wesleyan got off to a very strong start and had us down 14 points at one time in the first half," said Dittman.  Late in the period, the Lady T's rallied to come within a pair of points, 30-32, at halftime.

DSU got balanced scoring from Jennie Sonne, Hali McClelland, Amber Malvin, Honermann and Erin Nielsen.  Sonne worked the inside for 14 points. McClelland had 13 as the Lady T's went 25-45 from the field and 16-20 from the charity stripe. Malvin also came through with 10 counters, Honermann nine and Nielsen eight.

"Jennie did an outstanding job in the post," said Dittman. "Not only did she score, but she did a great job finding open people when she was double-teamed. Hali had another strong shooting performance and Jessica had an outstanding all-around game.

"We also got three very strong performances from Erin, Molly Hathaway and Amber."

McClelland had just six points at halftime, while Honermann had five and Sonne and Mandy Kruger each had four.

Defensively, the Lady T's held Dakota Wesleyan to just 22-of-53 field goal shooting, including 10 three-point successes.  Abbey DeWolf, Williams and Victoria Drefs shouldered the Lady Tigers' scoring load, earning 21, 20 and 12 points, respectively. DWU played the game without Randi Morgan, its 6-foot starting center.

Off the boards, the Lady T's outrebounded DWU 34-30.  Honermann and Sonne each had nine rebounds, while DWU was sparked by Tacey Faulhaber's eight nabs and Tera Ellefson's six.

On Friday, Dittman and his Lady Trojans face NCAA's Div. IIA's second-ranked University of North Dakota.
