Lady T's Trip Up VCSU's Lady Vikes

For their part, Dakota State University's Lady Trojans kept their slim postseason hopes alive Sunday, handing Valley City State a 65-59 DAC-10 women's basketball setback at the DSU Fieldhouse.  The Lady T's record stands at 4-11 in the DAC-10 prior to playing out their regular-season string against S.D. Tech and Black Hills State this weekend and then hosting Huron University on Valentine's Day.

Playing without the services of Jennie Sonne (DSU's starting center who is recovering from the flu), Hali McClelland, Trisha Grablander and Jessica Honermann came through with a trio of double-figures scoring displays.  "We had some outstanding performances in this game," said Jeff Dittman, DSU's head coach.

"Hali picked up her game for us with Jennie out of the lineup, and got 17 points and eight rebounds," added Dittman. "Jessica got 13 points and nine rebounds and Trisha hit three 3-pointers (13 total points) to keep Valley City from packing the zone inside."  McClelland also had four assists and a blocked shot, while Grablander had a blocked shot.

DSU, in the game's final 10 minutes, hit a number of free throws to keep Valley City from getting a lead over the Lady T's.  DSU shot free throws at a 21-of-26 clip, which helped to more than counterbalance a 22-20 field goal edge that Valley City had earned.

DSU clung to a two-point, 29-27, halftime edge. Valley City then came back from an early last-half deficit to knot the game at 57-all.

"We made plays again tonight," said Dittman. "For the majority of the season, we haven't been able to finish games because we couldn't hit key shots, get crucial rebounds or we would have a turnover at a critical time. Tonight, we did all the right things when Valley City tied the game at 57, and we came away with a win."

Valley City got a pair of double-figure ballgames from Molly Anderson and Jessica James, who had respective scoring nights of 19 and 13 points.
While it outgunned DSU from the field, Valley City went just 11-15 from the free throw line.

Each team claimed 41 rebounds in the contest.  Missy Leno had seven rebounds and Anderson and James each had five for Valley City.
