Dakota State University's basketball-playing Lady
Trojans could use a pair of at-home wins after
suffering a pair of defeats on the road to Mayville
State and Valley City State in North Dakota over the
weekend. On
Friday, the Lady T's were handed a heartbreaking
75-72 overtime loss by Mayville State and then were
beaten on Saturday 74-64 by Valley City State.
This weekend, DSU will pit
its 6-11 mark against Black Hills State on Friday
and S.D. Tech on Saturday at the DSU Fieldhouse.
Mayville 75,
Lady T's 72 (OT)
DSU surged
to a 19-2 game-opening lead Friday. Mayville then
took advantage of the Lady T's errant play to take
the game into overtime and eventually win the
three-point decision.
"We jumped up to a
quick 19-2 lead and had everything going our way for
the first 10 minutes of the game," said Jeff
Dittman, the Lady T's head coach. "From that
point on, we had a number of mental errors on both
ends of the court that allowed Mayville to come
back." DSU was behind 37-27 at halftime.
DSU got almost 50-percent
field goal shooting as the Lady T's went 28-of-60,
sparked by Jessica Honermann, Trisha Grablander,
Erin Nielsen and Jennie Sonne who had, respectively,
16, 14, 11 and 10 points. "Offensively,
we did a pretty good job most of the night,"
added Dittman. "We scored 72 points and shot 47
percent from the field. Our biggest problem was at
the defensive end. We couldn't stop their point
guard rotations and that opened up a lot of options
for them."
Mayville got 22 points from
Lindsey Eliason and 20 more by Kassy Anderson.
Kristeen Hoffman and Amy Martinson also had 13-point
outings for the winners.
Valley
City 75, Lady T's 64
While DSU got 21 points from Honermann and 16 more
by Sonne on Saturday, Valley City was getting 23
points from Melissa Leno and two more double-figures
displays from Molly Anderson, who had 14 points, and
Kristel Engelby, who had 10.
Two 8-0 scoring runs by
Valley City were crucial to its win, according to
Dittman, who got just one scoring run by his Lady
T's. "I was pleased with a lot of things
we did in this game, and with some individual
performances," said Dittman. "But, I was
disappointed that we were unable to shut down their
shooting guard, Missy Leno, who scored 23 points
against us. We are a better defensive team than we
showed this weekend, but we are going to have to
learn how to handle the great guards in our
league." |
