Dakota State University's Lady Trojans, with their
72-63 win over Jamestown College Saturday in
Jamestown, gained a 1-1 split on their North Dakota
weekend tour. On Friday, the Lady T's suffered a
75-66 setback to the University of Mary in
Bismarck. The split decision left DSU at 5-6
overall and 2-1 in the Dakota Athletic Conference.
This Friday and Saturday,
Minot and Dickinson State universities,
respectively, visit DSU for a pair of 6 p.m.
ballgames at the Fieldhouse.
At Jamestown Saturday,
Jennie Sonne and Erin Nielson sparked DSU's offense
with their respective 20- and 14-point
outings. They were supported by a number of
other Lady Trojans, including Sacha Santimano, who
had eight counters, Hali McClelland, seven, and
Jessica Honermann, six.

"We played very well tonight and got a number
of quality performances from our athletes,"
said Jeff Dittman, the Lady T's head coach.
"Jennie Sonne was dominant again tonight in the
low post, and I felt the rest of the team moved very
well without the ball and used all the options of
our offense.
"In particular, Erin
Nielsen, Jessica Honermann and Sacha Santimano did
an excellent job of finding open spots and running
our backdoor options."
DSU had a decided 27-20
field goal success edge over Jamestown and also
out-rebounded the Jimmies 34-26, with Honermann and
Sonne each claiming nine caroms. "They
led us in controlling Jamestown in this phase of the
game," added Dittman.
Jamestown's Kara Peterson
was the only player to enter double-figures
territory, netting 12 points. Erin Becker chipped in
nine counters. Peterson had nine rebounds.
Mary
75, Lady T's 66
DSU trailed 36-31 at halftime, and Mary never let
the Lady T's back into this contest. "In
the second half, Mary did a lot of sagging around
our posts and we weren't able to take advantage of
that with our perimeter shooting," admitted
Dittman.

On offense, DSU did the
things to win the ballgame, according to Dittman,
including being patient and getting good shots,
which DSU made at a 45-percent, 22-of-49 clip.
Sonne got 16 points and McClelland 14 to lead the
Lady T's.
"Our
breakdown...occurred at the defensive end,"
said Dittman. "We couldn't get matched up
properly in our zone and gave up four 3-point
baskets. When we played man defense, we couldn't
stop their penetration and ended up putting them on
the freethrow line most of the second half, as well
as giving up offensive rebounds when they missed a
shot."
All in all, it was a
frustrating night for the Lady T's, according to
Dittman. Nielsen and Santimano each added
eight points for DSU.
Mary got double figures
scoring from five of its Lady Marauders.
Jesse Slinde and Aften Miller each had 16 points and
Kari Wilcox 15. Sarah Leer and Jessica Zundel each
had 10 counters for the winners, who outscored DSU
28-18 in freethrow successes. |
