Prior to Dakota State University's entry in the Doane College Invitational at Crete, Neb., Jeff Dittman, the Lady Trojans' head coach, said the weekend tournament would be a yardstick for his women's basketball team.

The Lady T's were facing a pair of high-ranking teams: Hastings College, ranked #2 in last week's NAIA poll, and host-team Doane College, an honorable-mention unit.

Hastings and Doane gave DSU (2-2) its first losing lessons of the season: respective 79-58 and 82-68 defeats.

DSU'S Jenne Sonne (54) was the Lady T's top scorer in their two games in the Doane Classic Friday and Saturday in Crete, Neb.

     Hastings 79, Lady T's 58

Jennie Sonne was the only Lady Trojan to break into double-figures scoring, snapping in 12 points against Hastings' defense.  Mandy Kruger, Trisha Grablander and Hali McClelland were close behind with a trio of nine-point displays.

DSU trailed Hastings 44-28 at halftime.

Erin Nielsen's game-opening bucket for DSU gave the Lady T's their only lead of the contest.  A couple of free throws by Molly Hathaway with 7:35 left in the contest got DSU within eight points, 58-50, of Hastings, which proceeded to outscore the Lady T's 21-8 the rest of the way.

For the game, DSU was 20-of-49 in field goals, including a 5-13 showing from beyond the three-point arc.  Hastings, though, shot about 50 percent, 32-61, from the field, sparked by Elizabeth Herbe's 20 counters, along with Mary Stuehm and Carrie Hofstetter who each had 16.

Hastings also had a decided 38-27 rebound edge over the Lady T's with Teresa Harrenstein nabbing seven for the winners, while Sonne had seven for DSU.

Doane 82, Lady T's 68

In Saturday's action against Doane, Sonne again came through to lead the Lady T's offense, notching a 19-point display. Erin Nielsen added 11 counters and Amy Balk contributed nine points for the Lady T's.

Doane constructed a 46-30 halftime cushion.

Two early-game layups by Sonne had DSU ahead 4-2 with 18:39 left in the first half, but Doane melted that lead, went ahead 7-4 at the 17:20 mark and never looked back at the Lady T's.

Doane got double-figures scoring from Erin Gillespie, Amanda Creighton and Terri Wilbeck, who had respective 14-, 11- and 10-point performances.  Doane had a 25-23 field goal edge over the Lady T's, who were also outgunned 31-21 in freethrow successes.

The victors, who got seven rebounds from Wilbeck and six more by Gillespie, also had an ever-so-slight 45-44 rebound edge over DSU, which got eight rebounds apiece from Jessica Honermann and Sonne.
