Dakota State University's basketball-playing Lady Trojans suffered
their third straight loss Friday, dropping a 15-point, 67-52,
decision to Dakota Wesleyan University at the DWU Wellness Center
in Mitchell. The
losers' lesson was simple, according to Jeff Dittman, the Lady T's
head coach.
"Our problem Friday night was our
inability to put the ball in the hole," said Dittman.
"We got a number of good shots through penetration, but were
unable to finish. Our penetration also got us free throw
opportunities that we capitalized on in the second half (hitting
94 percent, 15-16), but we only shot 56 percent in the first half.
If we hit our short jumpers and free throws, we add another 20
points to our total."
Mandy Kruger, Jennie Sonne and Amy Balk
shouldered much of the Lady T's scoring load. Kruger snapped
in 12 points, while Sonne added 11 and Balk nine. The Lady T's
made just 26 percent of their field goals, going just 13-50, while
having a 24-32 night at the charity stripe.
DSU also lost the rebounds battle 47-37
with Jessica Honermann getting eight of the Lady T's 37 rebounds.
"We also broke down in
rebounding," added Dittman. "We played outstanding
defense against Dakota Wesleyan, holding them to 35-percent
shooting (21-60), but we were unable to keep them from getting
second shots. They were able to score at least 20 points off their
16 (offensive) rebounds."
It didn't hurt DWU, either, to get an
outstanding 30-point, 15-rebound performance from Randi Morgan,
who also got 15-point, 15-rebound support from Victoria Drefs.
"The good news is that we did some
things better against DWU than we did the weekend before in
Nebraska," concluded Dittman. "We have some things to
build on. If we will continue to play well defensively and
concentrate on our rebounding, we will take a lot of pressure off
our shooting."
The Lady T's travel to Sioux Falls
Tuesday, taking on the University of Sioux Falls at the Stewart
Center at 7:30 p.m.
