Dordt College's Lady Defenders couldn't live up to their team name
Wednesday, losing a lopsided 90-50 verdict to Dakota State
University's Lady Trojans in women's hoops play at the DSU
Fieldhouse.
The Lady T's, in their home season-opener, built a decisive 50-23
halftime cushion and never looked back at Dordt. The final
score reflected the Lady T's overall performance, according to
Jeff Dittman, their head coach.
"We played very well at all phases of the game,"
said Dittman. "Defensively, we put a lot of pressure
on Dordt and forced them into 26 turnovers. Many of those
turnovers led to fast-break baskets. Except for a few
minutes in the second half, we executed our half court
sets very well. We shot 53 percent from the floor in the
first half and 46 percent for the game."
DSU limited Dordt to just 7-of-38 field goal shooting in
the first half and 14-67 for the entire game. |

over Dordt College here Wednesday |
Dittman said that playing before a friendly, home crowd lifted his
women's efforts. "We had a great crowd at the game,
especially the students, and I think that helped a lot," he
added. "They were loud and I know our athletes appreciated
how they got into the game right from the tipoff."
DSU had three players enter double
figures scoring: Jessica Honermann came away with 15 points, while
Jennie Sonne added 11 and Mandy Krueger 10. They helped
their team mount a 30-65 field goal success night, along with a
24-36 showing at the charity stripe.
DSU out-rebounded Dordt 43-36 with Teresa
Hildebrand swiping nine caroms, Hali McClelland had seven and Leah
Bakke six. Sonne also had four assists as did Trish
Grablander, who had three steals.
Dordt's scoring and rebounding leader was
Serena Van Beek who collected 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady T's win Wednesday follows a
season-opening 66-52 victory over Mount Marty College in Yankton
last Saturday. DSU plays in the Doane College Invitational
Friday and Saturday in Crete, Neb., against some very solid foes,
according to Dittman. "We've played pretty well in our
first two games, but the next two will give us a chance to see if
we are one of the elite teams in the NAIA," concludes Dittman.
"On Friday, we play #2-ranked
Hastings College. Saturday matches us against Doane College, who
is an honorable-mention Top 25 team. By the time the weekend is
over, we will be able to judge how good our defense is and how
well we are running our transition game."
In the Lady T's two previous seasons,
they had made the NAIA's Elite Eight (2000) and, after winning the
DAC-10 conference title last year, the Sweet Sixteen.
