Dakota State University made the most of its 1-2 scoring punch of Kathy Shypulski and Jessica Honermann Saturday as Jeff Dittman's basketball-playing Lady Trojans got off to a winning start in Aberdeen.
Shypulski and Honermann had double-figure scoring performances of 21 and 15 points, respectively, as the Lady T's produced a convincing 75-47 win over Presentation College. "We got some outstanding individual performances," said Dittman. "Kathy was 8-for-10 from the field and Jessica was 7-12." Dittman saw his Lady T's forge a 15-point, 38-23, halftime cushion and didn't let up in the game's final 20 minutes. He admitted, though, that his squad still needs work on things prior to the home opener against Dakota Wesleyan University Tuesday evening. "We have some work to do to get a better flow to our offense," said Dittman, "but I was very pleased with our shot selection, shooting 48.4 percent for accuracy. We started to show signs of patience when attacking offensively, and that will be another key for our success this season." Jennie Sonne tacked on eight points while Heidi Honermann and Erin Nielsen had six apiece for DSU's offense. "Defensively, we held Presentation to 34 percent field goal shooting while giving up less than 50 points," added Dittman. "We also forced them into 27 turnovers and we outrebounded them by eleven (37-26) which is also critical to our success." Trisha Grablander had a team-leading five steals and DSU also got three each from Heidi Honermann and Shypulski. Sonne had nine rebounds, Shypulski seven and Nielsen six. Presentation got 15 points and seven rebounds from Tracelyn Nedd, and 10 points and four rebounds by Amber Pickerl.
