Jeff Dittman's Dakota State University Lady Trojans racked up their fourth-straight win of the young women's basketball season Friday, a 65-60 decision over Peru State. But its season-opening string was snapped by Baker University 75-72 in the championship of the Dana College Tournament at Blair, Neb., Saturday. DSU takes it 4-1 record to Grand Forks, N.D., Tuesday, against NCAA Div. II University of North Dakota.
"We got a quality win against a Peru State team that was
ranked #21 in the NAIA pre-season poll," said Dittman.
"The game was close throughout
with both teams
taking
leads." As for the game against Baker, Dittman added, "This was a very disappointing loss to us. We got off to a very fast start and held a 31-15 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. But, from that point on, Baker controlled the tempo and the rebounding." For her play in the two games, Jennie Sonne was named to the All-Tournament team. Sonne scored 34 points in the two games, along with nabbing six rebounds. Lady T's 65 Kathy Shypulski, Sonne, Heidi Honermann and Jessica Honermann sparked DSU's offense with a quartet of double-figure scoring performances. Shypulski put up 15 points and Sonne 13, while Heidi Honermann added 11 and Jessica Honermann 10.
DSU was down by four points with two minutes remaining in the contest, but then
outscored Peru down the stretch. A basket by Heidi Honermann
and a lay-up by Sonne, assisted by Hali McClelland was also cited by Dittman. "Hali played an outstanding game at both ends, adding nine points and pulling down nine rebounds," siad Dittman. Peru was led by Tammi Thompson with 16 points, followed by Sarah Dorrel with 14 and Tonya Volk with 10.
Lady T's 65 Against Baker, Sonne came through with a 21-point tilt-top performance. "Jennie was dominant for us early, while Baker was playing man defense," added Dittman. "She ended the game hitting 10 of 12 shots, scoring her 21 points. When Baker went to their zone to shut our inside game down, we didn't respond well. We rushed shots, rushed our attack and couldn't get to the boards." Jessica Honermann tacked on 13 points on 5-of-9 field goal shooting while Shypulski added 14, got 4-11 from the field and 4-4 at the free throw line. Jennifer Miller netted 19 points for the winners, who also got 14 counters from Gina Everett. "I think fatigue was a big factor for us," added Dittman. "We had been outstanding on defense for the first part of the game; then we lost complete control of Baker. We were slow with our reactions and were chasing them the rest of the game. We let down on the boards as well. They got too many second opportunities when we needed to make stops."
