Third

Jeff Dittman's Lady Trojans from Dakota State University took out their frustrations on Dakota Wesleyan University Saturday in the third-place contest of the DWU Teammakers Tournament. At the Corn Palace in Mitchell, DSU picked apart host-school Dakota Wesleyan 68-48 after losing 65-57 to Mount Marty College Friday to open up Teammakers play.
DSU now takes its 11-4 overall record up At the end of the Teammakers Tournament, Kathy Shypulski, one of DSU's starting guards, was among five players earning all-tournament honors. The others included tourney MVP Renae Heiden of Mount Marty, who was joined by fellow Lady Lancer Emily Fletcher, and Mayville State's Lindsay Eliason and Melissa Charboneau. Lady T's 68 Shypulski led the juggernaut-like play of the Lady T's, racking up 17 points against DWU's defenders. She was supported by Heidi Honermann's 10-point game, along with Jennie Sonne's seven-rebound outing, Hali McClelland's six grabs and Jessica Honermann's five.
"Kathy had another outstanding performance offensively," said Dittman. "Heidi executed our defensive scheme to perfection, picking up six steals, and Jennie, Hali and Jessica did a very good job of controlling the defensive boards for us." "When we have all three phases of the game playing that well, and so many athletes contributing, we are a difficult team to beat." DSU buried the Lady Tigers in the first half, surging to a 25-point, 43-18, halftime cushion. The Lady T's out-boarded DWU 41-33. Emily Janssen and Nikki Weber were DWU's leading scorers with their respective 14- and 10-point outings. Randi Morgan brought down 14 of the Lady Tigers 33 rebounds. Lady T's
57 Mount Marty's defense stifled DSU Friday, producing a 10-point, 36-26 halftime edge, and then held the Lady Trojans at bay, for the most part, in the second half. "Mount Marty is an excellent defensive team that will not let you come back on them," said Dittman. "With four minutes remaining in the first half, they went on a 14-4 run that built that 10-point lead. They never gave that lead up. We closed it to four a couple of times the second half, but couldn't get any closer." The Lady Lancers, despite a 20-19 field goal advantage, out-rebounded the Lady T's 39-37, which, according to Dittman, was vital in Mount Marty's win. "In our first game with Mount Marty, we were able to dominate the boards on them (44-31)," added Dittman. "But in this game, they outrebounded us by two. We weren't able to get many second-chance points and that, combined with 34-percent field goal shooting the first half, kept us from any scoring runs." Shypulski came through with a 20-point performance, while Sonne added 14. Heidi Honermann also scored eight points. Erin Nielsen came through with nine rebounds to lead the Lady T's in that department. Mount Marty was sparked by Anna Kranz, Fletcher and Stacy Schlumbohm, who had respective 12-, 11- and 10-tally games. Renae Heiden also had 11 tilt-top rebounds for the Lady Lancers.
