State University's Lady Trojans survived a series of surges and
scares by Indiana Southeast, before handing the Grenadiers a 59-43
defeat Thursday and advancing in the NAIA Div. II Women's National
Basketball Tournament.
The Lady T's were slated to play St. Francis, Ind., at noon Friday (today). St. Francis (31-5) dispatched Montreat (N.C.) 93-54 in Wednesday's first-round action. On the Sioux City Arena hardwood, DSU (23-8) threatened to turn the first-round game into a runaway, scoring the first 14 points of the ballgame in its first seven-plus minutes. Sparked by Kathy Shypulski's five points in the 14-0 run and a pair of Jessica Honermann lay-ups, DSU made the score 14-0. Then Amy Bates collected the Grenadiers' first two points, making two free throws at the 12:50 mark of the first half. Indiana SE (22-11) went on a 16-3 scoring run featuring a pair of 3's by Michea Embry and a another trey by Bates. "When they started in a player-to-player defense, our offense executed very well," said Jeff Dittman, DSU's head coach. "But, when they changed to their zone defense, we didn't attack it as well and didn't get as good of shots." Another 12-7 scoring surge by the Lady T's, highlighted by a 6-for-8 free throw shooting display, produced a 29-23 halftime cushion for DSU. DSU raced to a 47-28 advantage in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but then had to withstand another Grenadier run in which Indiana SE outscored DSU 15-12 in the remaining 10:05.
On offense, DSU got double-figures scoring from Jennie Sonne, who collected 14 points, Shypulski, who had 12, and Jessica Honermann, with 11. They helped DSU to 18-of-46, 39-percent field goal shooting. DSU
limited Indiana SE to a mere 15-52, 29-percent field goal shooting
as the Grenadiers got 13 points from Embry, eight from Kathy
Robinson, six from Amy Peterson and five by Bates. "Heidi Honermann did a great job for us on defense," said Dittman. She had five steals for the Lady T's and helped force the Grenadiers to turn the ball over 22 times. "We also got solid post play from Jennie and Ashley Anderson," said Dittman. "We needed to get the ball inside more against their zone.
The Grenadiers were led off the boards by Amy Stewart and Bates with five caroms each.
