Jeff Dittman's Lady Trojans from Dakota State University opened up the 2000-01 DAC-10 women's basketball campaign Saturday with a 74-71 road win over Huron Univesity.

Tom Cameron's DSU Trojans followed suit with a come-from-behind 108-102 overtime win over Huron in the twinbill's finale.

With the wins, DSU's women are now 7-2 and the Trojans are 3-5 heading into their next DAC-10 doubleheader Friday at the DSU Fieldhouse against the University of Mary.  DSU also hosts Jamestown College on Saturday.

In a tightly-played ballgame, DSU got double-figure scoring from five players.  Heidi Honermann and Erin Nielsen each arched in a dozen points, while Amy Balk, Kathy Shypulski,  and Jessica Honermann each collected 11 as the Lady T's shot 24-of-52 from the field and 21-35 at the charity stripe.

It was Balk's timely shot in the waning moments of the game which spelled the difference for DSU.  "A layup by Amy with 17 seconds remaining proved to be the winning basket in the Dakota-10 opener," said Dittman.  Erin Nielsen also added a free throw in the last few seconds to provide the margin of the win for us."

"Huron had a shot at tying but a 30-foot desperation shot was wide to the right and the Lady T's started the conference season off with a hard-fought win."

DSU had a razor-thin 34-33 halftime edge and managed to outscore Huron by a pair of points, 40-38, in the game's final twenty minutes to gain the win.

"Offensively, we had great balance," added Dittman.  "We used all the options in our offense and had balance between our inside game and our outside shooting.  We also got a lot of penetration, which helped us get to the free throw line.  Kathy Shypulski was 6-6 from the charity stripe and Amy was 7-10."

The home team Screaming Eagles out-rebounded DSU by 12 nabs (38-24) for the game.  "Our glaring weakness was our rebounding," added Dittman.  "We couldn't keep Huron off the boards and they got far too many second shots.  Giving up 18 offensive rebounds will usually get you beat.  Fortunately, we were able to make a couple big plays down the stretch that allowed us to pick up the win on the road."

Nielsen had a team-leading five rebounds while Jessica Honermann and Jennie Sonne each had five.

Huron University's offense was sparked by Kim Schwartz and Ruth Buffalo who each had 14-point scoring nights, Leza Narducci added a dozen counters and Ane Sandman 11.  Buffalo had a tilt-hight 11 rebounds and Sandman nine for Huron.
