Lady T's Return to
NAIA Tourney
|
|||||||||
Jeff Dittman's Dakota State University Lady Trojans will be making a return appearance in the NAIA Div. II Women's Tournament at Sioux City, Iowa, following their 94-82 DAC-10 title-clinching win over Huron University Saturday in Madison. The victory gave DSU a 14-4 record and an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament. The Lady T's will be playing for seeding in the national tournament when they host Valley City State University in postseason playoff action Wednesday at the DSU Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. Saturday's title-clincher came before a packed DSU Fieldhouse whose spectators saw Dittman's Lady T's take control of the game early and forge healthy double-digit leads throughout much of the contest.
The long-range shooting and scoring of Heidi Honermann, the inside performance of Jennie Sonne, a solid double-figures scoring night by Kathy Shypulski and double-figures rebounding by Jessica Honermann spelled the difference for DSU.
Honermann came through for DSU in a big way, launching nine 3-pointers and converting five of them, which figured heavily into her 27-point game-high scoring performance and the Lady T's perimeter game. DSU outgunned Huron University 32-29 in field goals and had a 22-17 scoring edge at the charity stripe. Sonne took care of the inside area for the Lady T's, painting the free throw area with an 8-of-9 field goal night, accounting for much of her 24-point display. Sonne also went 8-11 in free throws and had eight rebounds. Shypulski, while limited to under 20 points for the first time in many games, had 16 points for the Lady T's. Jessica Honermann also came through with 10 rebounds as the Lady T's out-swiped Huron 40-30 off the boards. DSU constructed a 12-point, 50-42, halftime lead and went on to lead by as much as 18 before a late-game surge by Huron cut the Lady T's lead down to 12 at game's end. Offensively, Huron University (12-6 in conference play and 17-10 overall) was led by Kim Schwartz, who went 8-15 from the field including six 3's, for 26 points. Felicia Jorgenson also garnered 18 points before fouling out late in the game, and Ruth Buffalo had 12. Jorgenson and Buffalo also had respective eight- and seven-rebound nights for the Screaming Eagles.
