DSU

Dakota State University is a unique institution where scholarship and excellence embrace technology and innovation.  In 1984, Dakota State was given the mission to provide instruction in computer science, information systems, and other related graduate and undergraduate programs.  By 1989, DSU had implemented a campus-wide networked computer system which is used extensively in coursework.  Today, Dakota State University is recognized and respected for its innovative and challenging computer environment.

Enrollment – Dakota State has a growing enrollment of over 2,400 students during the fall semester of 2006.  Freshmen enrollment has increased steadily over the past few years and the trend continued in 2004.

Location – The Dakota State University campus is located in Madison, SD, a community of 7,500 people.  Near two glacial lakes and one of South Dakota’s largest state parks, the area provides numerous year-round recreational activities.

Academic Programs – DSU offers degrees in a variety of disciplines all enhanced with leading edge technology.  Information Systems/Computer Science, Business and Teacher Education are the most popular majors among DSU students.  DSU recently added master’s degrees in Information Systems and Computer Education & Technology and bachelor degrees in E-Commerce and Web Development.  In addition, courses have been offered via the Internet since 1995 and now this distance delivery program at DSU has grown to include a Health Information Administration degree.

Faculty  Dakota State University has a student to faculty ratio of 18-1.  The faculty and staff of Dakota State are dedicated to helping students reach their total potential in all facets of their college and career experiences.

Technology  Dakota State offers a distinct learning advantage based on its mission to integrate the mastery of computer science and information systems technology throughout all academic disciplines.  More than 575 computers connected to a high speed network serve DSU students, faculty, and staff.  A number of these computers are available 24 hours a day and can be accessed in all academic facilities, library, residence halls, and student union.  DSU boasts a 4 to 1 student to computer ratio.

Internships & Career Placement – Internships provide an excellent opportunity for students to integrate professional experience into their curriculum.  Internships can be taken for college credit and are most often paid positions.  Dakota State graduates continue to enjoy astonishing placement success because of their academic achievement, training in technology, internship experience and career readiness preparation.  A number of programs consistently achieve 100% career placement including  Computer Science, Health Information Administration and English for Information Systems.  Business Administration and Elementary Education/Special Learning Behaviors come in at 90% or better.

Academic Facilities - Dakota State University’s academic facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art computer labs.  The Karl Mundt Library has direct on-line catalog access to more than 1.9 million resources from 30 state run library systems across the Midwest.  DSU also has access to more than 150 information databases.    DSU is home to a Governor’s Electronic Classroom (GEC) and a Dakota Digital Network (DDNN) site.  These classrooms provide students an opportunity to take classes with other students within the university system and around the state.  In the fall of 2000, the Madison Community Center  opened  its doors providing access to an indoor pool, racquetball courts, a walk/jog track, numerous multi-use courts and more.

Athletics – Championship banners decorate the DSU Fieldhouse, displaying the success that Dakota State athletics has achieved over the years.  As an NAIA member institution, DSU offers 12 intercollegiate sports.

Campus Life – Student activities spark friendships and encourage team-oriented activity while providing opportunities for students to broaden their perspectives.  DSU encourages the broadest participation possible across the entire student body.   There are a wide variety of clubs and organizations plus a number of social and networking opportunities. For those students wishing to participate in athletics but at a less competitive level, Dakota State offers an extensive intramural program.
