Whisper of Promise Reaches Amy
Balk, The race has begun..... The Dakota State University Lady T's are battling for the last SDIC championship. While this may seem like the end of an era to some... it is also the beginning of a new era. An era that the Lady T's look forward to. So, as the Lady T's lace up their shoes and head to the hardwood at the DSU Fieldhouse, they will be thinking not only of the games ahead of them, but to the promise of new beginnings whispering in their ears. This promise is not only heard in Madison, it travels to many far reaching places. Along its travels, the promise has reached Amy Balk, the newest member of the Lady T's basketball team. Amy is a 5'3" point guard from Mora, Minnesota. Although Amy may be new to the Lady T's, she is not new to the game of basketball. Even as a young child, the game of basketball whispered in her ears. She started playing basketball in sixth grade and received many awards throughout her career. As a 9th grader, she was honorable mention All Conference and an All District 18 Team member. Her sophomore year, Amy helped her team to a 2nd place Section 5AA and a subsection 16 second place finish. She also received All District 18 team member honors, was voted MVP by her teammates, named to the WCMP All Area team, and was voted Honorable Mention All-Conference. Amy's junior year proved to not only be a good year for Amy, but for her teammates as well. In the 1998-99 season, Mora finished 2nd place in the Rum River Conference, were District 18AA Sub-Section Champions, Section 6AA Champions and topped the year off with a fourth place finish at the Minnesota State Tournaments. Individually, Amy lead the team in assists (110), steals (105), and shot 74% from the free throw line. She was also named to the US Bank All Tournament Team, received All State Honorable Mention and Rum River All Conference honors, and was voted team MVP and given the Hustle Award by her teammates. She was also a Minnesota Elite All Star and a BCI All-American. Amy's senior season is still underway. Right now Amy is averaging 7.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.6 steals per game. Amy's achievements do not stop on the basketball court but travel on to the volleyball court and the softball diamond. Amy has enjoyed many success in both volleyball and softball. As a junior, Amy's softball awards include Who's Who in Sports, Rum River All Conference and All State Section 4A. In volleyball, Amy has been on a Section 4A championship team and was a State VB participant. Her senior year, Amy was given awards for most digs and for her defensive play. At Dakota State University, Amy will major in Fitness, Wellness Management and plans on being an Athletic Trainer in the future. So, while the winds of change are upon us, listen closely and you will hear the whisper of promise coming from the general direction of the DSU Fieldhouse.
