Dakota State University has received commitments from Sacha Santimano and Katie Mergen to complete its 2001-02 roster. The two guards will add speed and quickness to a backcourt that is undergoing transition with the graduation of All-American Kathy Shypulski and defensive phenom Heidi Honermann. Sacha Santimano is a junior college transfer from Neosha Community College in Kansas. Sacha averaged 6.3 points, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals a night in junior college and was voted the Most Improved Player her sophomore year. Academically, Sacha was on the Vice-President's Honor Roll and received and Associates Degree in Science. Off the court, Sacha was a member of the Student Senate. Sacha attended Lansing High School in Lansing, Kansas, and was named to the Classic Tournament All-Star Team twice and received an All-Star nomination while leading her team to a sub-state runner-up finish. Sacha averaged 8.1 points, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals her senior year. Sacha is the daughter of Victor and Yvette Santimano and will be majoring in Computer Science at DSU. The second signee is Katie Mergen, a 5-8 guard from Dell Rapids, South Dakota. Katie played for Dell Rapids St. Mary and is the daughter of Tom and Renae Mergen. She averaged 2.2 points, 2.1 steals and 1.7 assists a game while being named the team's Defensive Ace twice and the team's Hardest Worker. Katie will be majoring in Respiratory Care at Dakota State.
