The
Outstanding Male Athletes of the Year Awards are presented to those
outstanding athletes who have demonstrated excellence and leadership
in their athletic field.
Kurt Wallace (1997
recipient)--Kurt is from New Richland, MN and majored in Biology
Education. Kurt is well rounded athlete. He participated in Indoor
Track and Outdoor Track. Kurt's accomplishments are All-American
Honors for Indoor Track and 3rd in pentathlon in the National Indoor
meet.

John Ecklein (2000 recipient)--John's
performance in the individual sports of track and cross country have
earned his recognition as Male Athlete of the Year. John has
lettered four years in cross country and track. He is an NAIA
All-American in the 1000 meter run in which he placed second at the
National Indoor in 2000. He is All-Conference in Indoor Track and
the SDIC Conference Indoor Champion in the 1500 and the 800 meter
run. John was also a member of the winning 4 x 800 meter relay which
qualified for Nationals. For his accomplishments, he was named
Co-Male Outstanding Athlete in the SDIC Indoor Track Championships.
In fall 1999, John was All-Conference in cross country and in spring
1999 he was an All-American in the 4 x 800 meter relay. He holds the
DSU records in the 800 and 1,000 meters and the mile run. John set a
new school record in the 800 meter run at 1:52.31, which qualified
him for the National Meet in Abbottsford, British Columbia.

Jason Smidt (2000
recipient)--For his performance on the basketball court, Jason is
recognized for Dusty Andersen Memorial Award and outstanding Male
Athlete of the Year in 2000. He was also recognized for Male Athlete
of the Year in 2000. Jason was named a Second Team NAIA Division II
All-American in basketball in 2000. He is three time All-SDIC
selectee and was sixth in the nation this season in scoring average
with 23 points per game. He finished his career as DSU's fifth
all-time leading scorer with 1,731 points and holds career records
in three point field goals made with 302 and in a season with 116.
Jason also earned National Player of the Week honors in 2000 and was
a three-time SDIC Player of the Week.

Jared
Peterreins (2001 recipient)--Jared Peterreins, a
native of Tracy, Minnesota, played for DSU Football. Jared is a
record-setting wide receiver and garnered All-American recognition
for his accomplishments from the NAIA in 2001. He holds the DSU
record for career catches, season-high catches, game-high catches,
career yardage, season yardage, and game yardage. Jared has been a
three-time, first team All-Conference pick in both the previous
athletic conference--the SDIC--and the newly-created DAC-10
Conference.

Ted Sees (2002
recipient)--Ted is a Cross Country and Indoor Track standout. He was
recognized with All-Conference and All-District honors for his
season efforts in Cross Country. Additionally, he finished 39th out
of 249 runners at the NAIA National meet, just missing All-American
status. During the Indoor Track season, Ted again finished just
short of the All-American standings, finishing seventh in the 5000
meter race at the NAIA National meet.

Ted Sees (2003 recipient)--Ted is from Mission Hill, South Dakota.
Ted graduated with a degree in Biology for Information Systems. Ted
has been a Cross Country and Track standout for DSU. He was
recognized with All-Conference and All-Region III honors for his
season efforts in Cross Country, as well as qualifying for national
competition. Ted was selected as the Cross Country most valuable
player. For his participation in Indoor and Outdoor Track, Ted was
named a DAC-10 Scholar Athlete and qualified for national
competition for both seasons. Ted was also named the Male Athlete of
the Year in 2002.

Bryan Day
(2004 recipient)--Wheatland,
Wyoming native Bryan Day was named Outstanding Male Athlete of the
Year. His 2003 pitching performance had made him DAC-10
All-Conference and NAIA All-American. He posted a 10-2
pitching record and an ERA of 2.08, striking out 45 batters for the
season. He was a member of the team that won the first-ever
Region III tournament and advanced to the Super Regional Tournament,
just two games away from advancing to the NAIA College World Series.

Chris
Heezen
(2008 recipient)--Chris,
a native of Miller, SD, had an outstanding running career for Dakota
State University. He was named to NAIA All-American in Outdoor
Track & Field and Cross Country. Chris qualified to the NAIA
Nationals in Cross Country, Indoor Track & Field, and Outdoor Track
& Field during his career at DSU. He is a three-time DAC
All-Conference in Cross Country and DAC Scholar Athlete in Cross
Country and Track & Field.
