Outstanding Female Athletes of the Year

The Outstanding Female Athletes of the Year Awards are presented to those outstanding athletes who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their athletic field.

Amy Hansen (1997 recipient)--Amy majored in Mathematics Education.  She participated in Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track.  She was All-American for Cross Country and Indoor Track.  Amy has qualified for the Outdoor Nationals in Marietta, GA in 1997.

Marie Parker (1997 recipient)--Marie's major is B.S. in Education, Elementary Education.  She participated in Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track.  She was All-American Honors in Cross Country and Indoor Track.  Marie has also qualified for the Outdoor Nationals in Marietta, GA.

Desa Rae Doyle (2000 recipient)--Desa Rae was chosen as the Female Athlete of the Year based on her performance in track and field events.  Desa Rae is only in her second year on the Dakota State track team but her accomplishments are already significant.  She is the NAIA National high jump champion with a jump of 5'6'' and an All-American.  She is also the SDIC Conference Champion, tied the conference record and holds the Dakota State high jump record in both indoor and outdoor track.  Desa Rae has qualified for the outdoor national championship in 2000 at Abbottsford, British Columbia.

Sheila Haack (2000 recipient)--Sheila was named the Female Athlete of the Year along with Desa Rae Doyle in 2000 for Sheila's successful performance on the Lady T's.  Sheila Haack is a three-time SDIC All-Conference player and was also named as an NAIA Academic All-American her senior year.  In 2000, the women's basketball team won it's 11th SDIC Championship, won the post-season championship, and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NAIA National Tournament.  Sheila is number two in the DSU record books in career points with 1,497, career rebounds with 736, and career field goals with 590.  She holds the records in field goal percentage at 60% and career free throws of 316.

Desa Rae Doyle (2001 recipient)--Desa Rae Doyle has been chosen as the Female Athlete of the Year based on her performance in track and field events.  A native from De Smet, Desa Rae's accomplishments are significant.  She is a five-time NAIA All-American in indoor and outdoor competition and holds the Dakota State high jump record in both indoor and outdoor track.  She placed fifth in the high jump in the NAIA Indoor Track Nationals in 2000 and has qualified for the outdoor national championship in 2001.

Kathy Shypulski (2001 recipient)--A forward from Blaine, Minnesota, Kathy has been a leader for the Lady Trojans during her four-year career at DSU.  In addition to the conference and NAIA honors, Kathy was selected by the Dakota Athletic Conference as the women basketball's most valuable senior player.  Kathy finished her career at DSU as the third all-time highest scorer, as third in career assists, as eighth in single season assists, and the top three-point shooter in DSU history.

Laura Carrow (2002 recipient)--Laura has been chosen as the Female Athlete of the Year based on her performance in Cross Country and Indoor Track.  During the 2001-02 Indoor Track season, Laura earned All-Conference honors and took first place in the DAC-10 meet in the 3000 meter race.  Her Cross Country achievements have been outstanding.  Laura finished first in the DAC-10 Conference meet and finished 11^th in the 245 runner field at the NAIA national meet.  For her efforts, she was recognized as an All-American and Academic All-American by the NAIA and received All-District and All-Conference honors.

Kristie VandenHoek (2003 recipient)--Kristie VandenHoek has been chosen as the Female Athlete of the Year based on her performance in Indoor and Outdoor Track.  Kristie is a Elementary Education graduate from Stickney, South Dakota.  As a member of the track team, Kristie was named All-Conference in 2000 and 2002 and has indoor school records in the 1600-meter relay, the 800-meter relay and the 400-meter dash.  She also holds school records in outdoor track for the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter realy.  Kristie has participated in numerous NAIA Championships and was named NAIA All-American in the 400-meter dash.  She also holds the DAC-10 Conference record in the 400.  Kristie was named NAIA Academic All-American in 2002 and 2003.
