Second-half Mt. Marty surge spoils Trojans' season opener

DSU had its last lead, 77-76, at the 4:45 mark, but a 16-7 scoring run by the Lancers stopped the Trojans cold.

Justin Bonnichsen launched 29 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to spark Mt. Marty's win.

"We played well for more than 35 minutes," said Schuring. "In the last almost five minutes of the game, Mt. Marty's veterans took over and we didn't respond as well as we will later in the year."

The Trojans got four players, J.F. Jensen, Kyle Konopasak, Anthony Scott and Ian McKeithen, into double-figures scoring -- a game-to-game goal set by Schuring and his staff.

Jensen arched in 18 points, which included a perfect 12-for-12 display at the charity stripe. Konopasak snapped in 15 points, which included 4-5 field goal shooting and three 3-pointers.

Scott collected 14 points, which included a 6-8 display from the field, and McKeithen added 11, going 4-8 in two-point goals.

"It's a game we can definitely build on," added Schuring. "Our rebounding was solid as well as our perimeter defense."

DSU had a two-rebound, 35-33, edge over Mt. Marty, with McKeithen leading the Trojans' balanced-rebounding effort with six rebounds. Jensen and Scott had four rebounds each.

Mt. Marty managed seven 3-pointers in the game, but outshot the Trojans 35-26 in field goals made.

In addition to Bonnichsen's 29 points, Shaun Reiff and Cory Heien had 17 points apiece, while Andy Witte added 12.

Schuring was encouraged with his Trojans' play Tuesday and sees good things coming in the future.

"If we play this hard the rest of the way, we will be in position to win a lot of ballgames," concluded Schuring.

DSU plays in the USF Men's Basketball Classic Friday and Saturday at the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls. The Trojans play Morningside College at 6 p.m. Friday and the University of Sioux Falls Saturday at 8 p.m.
