Dakota State University stayed close to Doane College in the
first half of its game Saturday,
but
couldn't survive Doane's second-half play, losing a 115-98
verdict in Crete, Neb.
Tim Schuring's Trojans (2-7) led by as much as six points,
25-19, midway into the first half when Ryan Burggraff canned a
lay-up. Doane fought back to gain a three-point, 58-55,
halftime edge.
Doane (4-4) staged a 14-point, 57-43, scoring surge to hand
the Trojans their seventh loss of the season.
Dakota State played the game without J.F. Jensen, one of its
starting guards, who is out with a knee injury.
"In the first half, we finally had our offense `clicking on
all cylinders'," said Schuring. "Without J.F. on the floor, we
could have struggled, but we had others ready fill the gaps."
Orion Garo (pictured right) was one
of Schuring's Trojans who stepped up his game Saturday, having
a perfect 10-for-10 field goal shooting night and going 2-2 at
the free throw line to lead the Trojans with 22 points. The
6-foot-10 Albanian center, however, played the game saddled
with four fouls.
"It's great to see Orion perform up to his capabilities on the
offensive end of the floor," said Schuring. "He's talented and
athletic, but we just need to find a way to keep him out of
foul trouble."
Sal Raphael added 15 points and six rebounds for Dakota State,
while also getting 11 tallies by Anthony Scott.
For the night, Dakota State had a solid 42-64, 65.5-percent
field goal shooting.
Doane, sparked by Brian Jakubowski's game-high 29-points, had
a 40-72 field goal shooting night. The winners made a dozen
3's to the Trojans' five.
Jarred Royal also scored 21 points for Doane, which also got
15 from Adam Schueth and 12 more from Bryshonne Bryant.
Doane's 36-24 rebounding cushion, along with its 23-9 scoring
edge on the charity stripe, were crucial to its win, according
to Schuring.
"Rebounding has been a thorn in our side all year," said
Schuring. "We're just going to have to find a way to make it
better."
The Trojans continue their road work this coming weekend in
N.D., playing the University of Mary in Bismarck Friday and
Jamestown College in Jamestown Saturday.
