DSU Assessment Update - Issue 1 - September 1999
Employers Rate DSU Graduates High in Skills

Each year, employers rate DSU graduates in three areas: computer skills, job-related skills, and communication/socialization skills.  According to employers of DSU graduates, the use of computers in the workplace has increased dramatically over the past four years.  In 1999, employers indicated that 84% of the DSU grads used computers every day compared to 67% in 1996.  In 1999, an additional 13% of the graduates used computers several times a week.  Based on the average ratings, DSU graduates were rated highest in their ability to learn on the job, adapt to changes in the computing environment, and use computer software.  The largest increase in ratings between 1998 and 1999 occurred in graduates’ ability to adapt to changes in the computing environment.  Ratings also increased in oral and written communications.

Other survey highlights include:

  • 83% of the graduates were rated “Very good” or “Good” in their ability to appreciate the cultural and ethnic differences among people
  • 89% of the graduates were rated “Very good or “Good” in their ability to use computer software
  • 85% of the employers rated their overall satisfaction with DSU graduates as “Very Good” or “Good”
