Text Box: What’s happening with the new positions?
 
The Title III Grant includes three new positions: retention specialist, information development specialist and student support specialist. The following includes a brief summary of their job duties and the timeline for filling the positions.

Retention Specialist: This position will coordinate the campus-wide student retention efforts and work directly with faculty to coordinate the university’s tutoring and advising programs.  The Retention Specialist will work cooperatively with faculty advising specialists to redesign the advising program.  The Search and Screen Committee has reviewed the applications and conducted phone interviews with the top candidates.
Information Development Specialist:  This position will develop and design institutional research reports and interpret these reports.  This position will write SAS programs to analyze institutional research data.   Kristy Ahrendt, a 2005 DSU graduate, accepted this position and began work on May 16th.  She is a member of DSU’s Faculty Advising Specialist Team (FASTeam) and is instrumental in developing the Title III Intranet site.
Student Support Specialist: The Student Support Specialist will work with faculty and staff to design, develop, and pilot procedures to facilitate initial screening utilizing the early alert warning system. This position will assist students with basic study skills, time management and personal choices by providing appropriate referrals and monitoring. This position was advertised on June 21st and will close on July 11th. 
Faculty Advisors: Dr. Gabe Mydland will serve as the campus-wide at-risk specialist. The colleges selected the following faculty to serve as faculty advising specialists: Don Wiken, Deana Hueners, and Rick Puetz. Tom Halverson is serving as an advisor in the area of Freshmen Success. Judy Dittman is serving as the Interim Retention Specialist and is leading the Faculty Advising Specialist Team (FASTeam). 
Title III Interim Report

 

The Title III reporting process includes a six-month

interim report which was submitted to the
Dept. of Education in April. The report included an

update on progress towards the first year’s

Title III objectives.

 

Objective 1: By September 2005, approve the

Early Alert and Referral System

 

Performance Indicator 1a: By January 2005, 90%

of the early alert system will be ready for the

pilot.

Progress Report: DSU is piloting a web-based

early alert and referral system. To assist with

DSU’s retention planning, Noel-Levitz

developed a Student Retention Model using

a statistical modeling process

Performance Indicator 1b: By March 2005,

equipment, software and additional materials will

be purchased and installed.

Progress Report: The SMARTHINK online

tutoring system was purchased in December 2004.

Students in selected classes piloted the system

during spring 2005.

 

Objective 2: By August 2005, faculty / staff

   participants in Quality Service Training will

   demonstrate 80% of mastery of skills as indicated

   on pre-and post-training assessments.

 

Performance Indicator 2a: By June 2005, 50

faculty and staff will participate in quality

service training.

Progress Report: During summer 2005, quality

service training will be conducted for staff in

highly visible service positions on campus.

   

   Objective 3: By September 2005, 50% of new

   baseline reports will be available including:

·        Retention statistics on selected groups            

·        Survey results on quality service

 

Performance Indicator 3a: By May 2005, baseline

reports will be available and used to evaluate

strategic goals.

Progress Report: Retention reports for selected

groups of students were distributed.
