What are Placement Tests?
To ensure that students are proficient in the skills necessary to successfully complete general education coursework, student competencies in reading, writing, and math are evaluated. All incoming, degree-seeking students must provide valid Enhanced ACT scores or complete computerized placement tests in reading, writing and mathematics. To be valid, the student must have taken the Enhanced ACT examination within five years of the date of enrollment. For all students without valid ACT scores, the ACT COMPASS (computerized placement tests) will be used to determine placement in English, math, and reading courses.

Because computer skills are critical to DSU's mission, student's computing skills are evaluated using a multiple-choice computer skills test.

Should students study before taking the placement tests?

Sample questions for each area are available for review prior to taking the COMPASS tests..  They are available in the Assessment Office or checkout the assessment website at http://www.departments.dsu.edu/assessment.

What do the results mean?

Students and their advisors receive a placement report with their scores and specific course requirements. All courses that are prerequisites to general education courses must be completed prior to attempting 24 credit hours of coursework.
