What is Major Field Assessment?

What is major field assessment?

The purpose of this component of the assessment program is to evaluate students’ knowledge in their major field and to assess the curriculum within each major. The faculty from each college have developed goals, outcomes, and assessment criteria for each major. All candidates for graduation in associate-and baccalaureate-degree programs will complete various assessment activities specific to their major field of study. Examples of the assessment activities include an exit survey, essay exams and/or standardized tests, locally developed exams and portfolios. Students who do not participate in the assessment activities will not be allowed to graduate.

Student satisfaction surveys

Each year a student satisfaction survey is administered to a random sample of students during selected class periods. This survey allows students to rate both the importance of various programs and services and their satisfaction with these programs and services. This information is used by the entire campus as one means of evaluating the effectiveness of their department. The results are published in the campus newspaper and in reports prepared for faculty and staff.

Additional Assessment Activities:

Other survey instruments also provide information used to evaluate DSU’s courses and programs. The DSU Employer Survey has been used since 1993 to survey employers of the previous year’s graduates. The DSU Graduate Survey has been used since the 1980’s to assess graduates’ level of satisfaction with the curriculum in their major programs.  Both of these surveys are also used to assess areas that are central to DSU’s mission such as computer skills and communication skills. The Assessment Office prepares detailed annual reports on this data and publishes short news articles summarizing the results. Periodically, all faculty and staff are surveyed using the Campus Quality Survey. This provides information on faculty and staff’s satisfaction with a wide variety of issues.
