DSU LADY T'S PLAY IN NAIA DIVISION II TOURNAMENT

The Lady T's women's basketball team has completed its most successful season in a decade.  The 1999-2000 squad shared the last SDIC title with S.D. Tech, compiling a 10-4 conference mark.  Then, in the SDIC post-season tournament, DSU posted wins over Mt. Marty (79-61) and S.D. Tech (79-71).  This is the first SDIC tournament championship for DSU since a change in playoff formats in 1995.  With this win, the Lady T's gained their first ever automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Sioux City, IA, and the road grew longer.
Receiving an 11th seed, DSU found its first obstacle in the National Tournament in  St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.).  Aquinas finished the regular season 18-6 and was the number one three-point shooting team in the country.  Their shooting guard, Jackie DeNuzzo, was also the nation's leading three-point shooter.  With a stifling defense, strong post play, and dominating rebounding, DSU posted a 74-55 win.  Sheila Haack led the Lady T's with 22 points on 9-10 shooting from

PLACEMENT SUCCESS AT DSU

Dakota State University officials report a record-setting 97% overall placement success for the Class of 1999. Several areas reported 100% placement: Computer Science, Information Systems, English for Information Systems, Elementary Education/Special Learn

ing Behaviors, Health Information Management, Respiratory Care, and Business Management. Business Administration was close behind, at 94%.
"Candidates with technology related degrees are undoubtedly the most sought after group of graduates and continue to

prompt competition among employers. The competition has gotten so intense that employers are scurrying to schedule on-campus recruiting visits eight months prior to graduation."  said Marie Lohsandt,

Placement Rates…..

Director of Career and Placement Services at DSU.
According to Lohsandt, the highest average salary was reported in the Computer Science area at $46,900. The overall average salary for the Class of 1999 was $25,931.
"There is no doubt that the market for new college graduates with technical skills remains strong. With the healthy economy and continued low unemployment, we expect that employers will actively be scouting DSU's campus for their new wave of employees," said Lohsandt.

Although target projections for the Master of Science in Information Systems at Dakota State University were set for 20 students a year, the program has experienced phenomenal growth in its inaugural year. As of last spring, sixty-five students were admitted to the program, including both full and part time students.
"I was surprised at how many students wanted to be full-time. I originally thought the program would be made up of mostly part-time students," said Laurie Dennis, director of graduate programs at DSU. She also noted that the students have bachelor degrees in a variety of areas including information systems, music, biology, education, and psychology.
"What is unique about the
large enrollments is that the University has done little marketing and has relied on word-of-mouth promotion and internet communication," said Dennis. "I get calls and emails daily from people all over the world inquiring about the program. Obviously, the demand for MSIS is extremely high."
Beginning with Fall 2000, the program can be completed in five full-time semesters. Classes are scheduled on Saturdays and evenings for the convenience to students.

Dennis noted there was a lot of teamwork among the students and that there is a real camaraderie among those already enrolled. She also said that the classes were small with lots of hands-on experiences. There are even students who plan to use what they already have learned and are exploring business opportunities.

went on a 7-0 run to take the lead with 0:47 seconds remaining.  After a timeout, the Lady T's found Krista Peterson open on the left wing for a three-point basket and DSU was back on top by one.  After a missed shot by the Chargers, DSU was fouled and put in two freethrows to go up by one.  One last chance for Briar Cliff failed to result in any points and Dakota State had a 58-54 win.  Kathy Shypulski led the Lady T's in scoring with 16 points while Sheila Haack grabbed a team high 13 rebounds.
In its first ever "Elite Eight" appearance, DSU was feeling the effects of the relentless pressure Briar Cliff had put

on them the previous night.  Northwest Nazarene (ID) again pressured the Lady T's and forced 27 turnovers.  DSU trailed most of the game but made one final run late in the second half to close the score to 46-47.  From then on, however, NW Nazarene ran off 23 points to only 9 for Dakota State and the magical trip was over for DSU.
The Lady T's finished 25-8 (a school record for wins) and won eleven of their last thirteen games.  Two players were named to the SDIC All-Conference team.  Kathy Shypulski, a junior from Blaine, MN, was named to the first team while senior center Sheila Haack was a second team

choice.  DSU had three Academic All-Americans:  senior Sheila Haack and juniors Kathy Shypulski and Heidi Honermann.  Kathy Shypulski was also named an Honorable Mention All-American.

Dates in DSU History

  • 1903-Madison State Normal Band organized.

  • 1930-Girton House used as men's dorm.

  • 1926-Eastern Alumni Organization formed.

  • 1936-Girton House made into home for President.

A LEGACY AFTER SEVENTY YEARS OF SILENCE

August mornings at DSU are usually quiet and casual.  Except for special programs, the campus is pretty empty and most of the faculty are on vacation.  The staff tends to dress casually and the pace is a lot more methodical.  In the DSU Foundation office, it's a time for planning more than actual fundraising.  But one morning this last August, Marty Gallanter, Foundation Director got a surprise phone call.  An attorney from Prescott, Arizona was calling to advise the university that Mrs. Lucille Steiber had passed away and that the 90 plus-year old woman had left the bulk of her estate to Dakota State University for, as the will stated, "a scholarship endowment for students of good character and financial need."   The estimated value of the estate of nearly $400,000.
After taking down the pertinent details and expressing gratitude to the attorney for his phone call, Marty started some research, much to his surprise, found absolutely no record of any Steiber in the database.  How was this woman connected to Dakota State and what motivated her to leave so much money for such a worthy cause?  The detective work began immediately.  The lawyer was of no help.  He had only known Mrs. Steiber for a short time and had no information on her background.  To his knowledge, there were no other family members left to call. Foundation staff contacted the newspaper in Prescott and got a copy of the obituary.  This document led to Christian Steiber, Lucille's husband, who passed away in the mid 1980s.  School files old enough to be of any use were non existent. After a certain number of years, many had been discarded and more were destroyed in a campus fire during the 1960s.  Finally, a detailed search of old

year books revealed a picture of Christian as a second year student.  After that he disappears again but comes up one more time on a 1928 Alumni list, using a Madison, South Dakota address.
To the best of our university records, Christian Steiber had no contact with Dakota State (or Madison State Normal School as it was known in his day) since 1928.  Since he does not appear on the graduation lists for 1918 or 1919, he probably went off to fight the First World War and returned to finish his education afterward.  No one really knows the exact history.  The Foundation did find out that he retired in the 1960s as rural mail carrier and the couple moved to Arizona where they lived until their deaths.  Maybe Christian got tired of being a teacher or maybe something else happened in his life to redirect his profession.
But even after seventy plus years of no known contact with the University, he remembered DSU and has provided an endowment that will help students obtain an education through the next century.  The Christian and Lucille Steiber Memorial Scholarship Endowment will probably start issuing scholarships beginning with the 2002 school year.  Thank you Christian and Lucille.  Even though none of us had ever met, you will both always be remembered at Dakota State.

Mickey Mouse...      (continued from page 10)                 She also became an elementary school teacher in the Kansas City school system where, during the early days of the First World War, she had a student named Walter Disney.  Mrs. Fellers recognized the young man's talents and encouraged him strongly to pursue his talent.  This was back in the days when being a cartoonist was not exactly a respectable profession.  But that was Aunt Daisy.  Her own rebellious independence was passed on to those students who were willing to explore uncharted territory.
During the Second World War, the now famous Hollywood producer, Walt Disney, made a special trip to Kansas City to visit his old school, receive an award and, in what turned out to be surprise gesture, personally served a slice of the celebration cake to Mr. Daisy Beck Fellers who was sitting in the audience.  Disney credited Mrs. Fellers with being his inspiration.  He has been quoted as saying that without Mrs. Fellers encouragement, he would never have gotten started.  Of course, what Walt Disney started has now become the world's premier entertainment corporation and the most dominant single symbol of American culture.  Would it have all happened without the efforts of one our own alumni?  Who knows?  But we can all probably guess who Mr. Disney had in mind when he developed Donald Duck's girlfriend Daisy.

GROWING PAINS?

The College of Business at Dakota State is outgrowing its space-a problem, yes, but a good problem.  The 9 percent increase in enrollment in the fall of 1999 meant the hiring of additional instructors and an increase in class offerings.  But where to house those additional classes has left faculty and staff in the College of BIS looking

elsewhere on campus.  Long term solutions are being investigated, but for the time being some offices from the Kennedy Center are being relocated to East Hall.  And when the Business and Education Institute moves to Lowry Hall in the spring, and Computing Services completes its move to another campus location, even

more of East Hall will be available for overflow use.  The College of Business and Information Systems offers 17 degree programs.  Between the fall of 1998 and fall of 1999, BIS saw an enrollment increase of 11 percent in undergrad programs.  Including the graduate program, BIS enrollment increased by 16 percent.

What is the mindset of  today's college freshmen,                                                                most of whom were born in 1981?

  • John Belushi and John Lennon have always been dead.
  • They  have never needed a prescription for Ibuprofen.
  • Cats  has been on Broadway all of their lives.
  • They have always been able to get their news from CNN and USA Today.
  • They didn't think there was anything terribly futuristic about 2001 and were never concerned with 1984.
  • They never heard anyone say "Book em Danno", or "Kiss my grits" in prime time.
  • Strikes by highly paid athletes have been a routine part of professional athletics.

HISTORICAL HEADCOUNT NUMBERS

ALUMNI DONATE MEMORABILLIA

Dakota State University                    is Madison's largest employer according to a recent survey.                  The University employs 421 people, half of which are permanent, full-time employees.  The rest are adjuncts, work-studies, or part time hourly employees.

Last Fall Bonnie Olson of  Mundt Foundation asked for donations from alumni of their college memorabilia to be displayed as part of the DSU Achieves.  Since then the Mundt Foundation has received many wonderful items, among them….. an "E Jacket" from Alice Martinson Krieger, '38.  Alice wrote that she was happy to earn it and wore it with pride.  She wore it during her association with the

Women's Athletic Association in 1938-39…...  Lyle Haug., '40, sent  photographs, newspaper clippings and a copy of the play 'Our Town', along with a letter.  Mr. Haug proudly served with the 34th Infantry Division during World War II and remembers his years at General Beadle as simple prelude to the horrors he witnessed during the war…...Richard Matthews, '57, donated several annuals.

He has been living in Baraboo, WI for 33 years and sells real estate with his wife…... Marian Chamberlin Chalberg, '37, of  Santa Barbara, CA, sent her Eastern WAA Sweater.  When she graduated with her certificate in 1937, Marian signed a teaching contract  for $720 a year and with some very stringent restrictions such as dismissal if she got married!              Thank you to all who sent in memorabilia and memories!

SPORTING NEWS….MEN'S BASKETBALL

DSU's SMIDT SELECTED     ALL-AMERICAN

Dakota State University's men's basketball player Jason Smidt has been named Second Team NAIA II All-American.  Smidt, a three-time ALL-SDIC selection, was 6th in the nation this season in scoring average with 23.1 points per game.  He finished his career as DSU's fifth all-time leading scorer with 1,731 points and is the leader in three point field goals made for a career (302) and in a season (116).  The 6'2" senior guard from Brookings also earned National Player of the Week honors this season and was a three-time SDIC Player of the Week.
Smidt is the fourth DSU player to be nationally recognized.  Cliff Anderson was an NAIA All-American in 1973, Brett Scwartz an Honorable Mention selection in 1991 as was Myron Moen in 1967.  The NAIA formed two divisions beginning in 1992.

January 18, Jason was named the NAIA II National Player of the Week.  Smidt finished his career as the all-time leader in three point field goals made with 302 and for a season with 116.  He is 5th on the career scoring list with 1,731 points.
Namanny, a three year starter at point guard, was the Trojan's second leading scorer averaging 14.9 points per game and 5.4 assists per game (2nd in the SDIC).  He is currently in 3rd place on the career assists list with 367.
For the second straight year 6'4" sophomore Jon Peterreins led the team in rebounding pulling down a total of 300 rips for a 10.7 average which was 9th in the NAIA II statistics.  In just two years Peterreins, a Tracy, MN native, is in 8th place on the DSU career rebounding ladder.  After leading the SDIC as a freshman he was second this season with a conference average of 9.6.  He also averaged 9.7 points per game this season.  Tyrone Davis, a 6'5" freshman from Colorado Springs, CO set a school record for blocked shots in a season with 32 rejections.  Davis, whose wingspan measures 6'9", averaged 8.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per outing.  6'6" junior center Robbie Sylliaasen moved into  19th place on the career rebounds list with 333.  Sylliaasen, an Irene native, started every game while averaging 6.9 ppg and 4.0 rpg.
Joe Allen, 5'10" sophomore from Colorado Springs, CO had several double figure scoring games as a reserve guard.  Allen averaged 8.5 points per game.  Joey Hulsebus contributed 4.8 ppg and 3.0 rpg as a starter in several games.  Hulsebus is a 6'7" freshman from Astoria.  Others making positive contributions to the team this year were Kevin Breiter, 6'2" junior from Mapleton, MN, Chad Kurtenbach, 5'11" junior from Toronto, Ryan Reiner, 6'8" sophomore from Tripp, and Adam Bobzien, 6'5" freshman from Dell Rapids.

As a team DSU led the conference in team three point shooting percentage  (45.3%) and was second in team scoring (80.9 ppg).
For the fourth year in a row the Trojans beat a nationally ranked team.  At the Big M Shootout in Golden, CO, DSU defeated Palm Beach Atlantic (FL) College 88-83.  PBC won the Florida Sun Conference and was ranked #15 in the NAIA II's final season ranking.  Six of the Trojans nine conference losses were by ten points or less.  Other key wins included defeating the University of Sioux Falls, Dakota Wesleyan University, and three overtime wins versus Valley City State University and Black Hills State University twice.  With the support of the many rambunctious fans at the DSU Fieldhouse, this year's team compiled an 8-4 home court record.
"It was an enjoyable experience to coach this team" said Head Coach Tom Cameron, "We made a lot of progress and turned the corner as far as gaining respectability.  We were a very competitive team."
"Now we need to keep building on what we've gained and improve even more next season".  With Smidt being the only senior,  the 2000-01 Trojans are looking forward to joining the Dakota Athletic Conference.  The DAC-10 will include SD Tech, BHSU, Huron Univ., Minot State, Dickinson State, Mary Univ., Jamestown College, Valley City State, and Mayville State.
