Administrative Experience in Higher Education
Vice President For Academic Affairs Dakota State University, Madison SD
Appointed to the position on an interim (acting) basis in October
1998. Named to the position in June 1999. October 1998 to present.

esponsibilities: 
  • Supervise deans and directors of academic support areas and Enrollment Services (Registrar, Admissions, Financial Aid).

  • Responsible for academic integrity of institution and for resolution of conflicts involving academic areas. 

  • Represent DSU on Academic Advisory Council (system-wide committee of academic vice presidents plus BOR Office liaison) and periodically serve as chair of system task forces (most recently chair of the Student Opinion Survey task force).

  • Chair of Academic Council, Graduate Council, Institutional Effectiveness Committee, DSU Retention Committee (co-chair). Member of Title III steering committee and Wireless Mobile Computing Initiative.

Accomplishments:

  • Member of system team that has guided evaluation / redraft of system-wide general education goals, student learning outcomes, course criteria.

  • Provided leadership for similar evaluation of mission-specific goals, student learning outcomes and course criteria on DSU campus. 

  • Guided development, approval and accreditation of institution’s three graduate degrees: M.S. in Information Systems, M.S. in Educational Technology and M.S. in Information Assurance; currently responsible for institution’s application for D.Sc. in Information Systems

  • Guided development of graduate programs office, policies governing graduate education, etc.

  • Helped guide institutional processes / decisions in move to institutional accreditation through AQIP process; institution earned 10-year accreditation from North Central Association in 2001.

  • Provided leadership for NCATE program review; institution earned 5-year accreditation from NCATE in 2002.

  • Worked with assessment specialist to re-organize academic program review process and develop guidelines for self-study reports that more closely mirror institutional accreditation criteria

  • Worked with faculty committee to examine and re-vitalize university’s honors program and to grow institution’s research culture.

Academic advising center for undecided majors. September 1977 to May 1981.

Responsibilities:
  • Managed work-study, clerical and professional advising staff.
  • Served as academic advisor for 150-200 college freshmen.
  • Taught classes and workshops in career planning.
  • Assisted with on-the-road recruitment of prospective students.
  • Acted as assistant to the dean of the college.

Accomplishment:

  • Co-authored workbook used in career planning classes.
  • Designed and coordinated production of brochures used by college for student recruitment.
  • Was first full-time director of advising center and developed worksheets, handouts and mailings to improve registration process for undecided majors.
  • Developed series of l-day workshops for high school seniors.
Teaching Experience
Full Professor in Business and Information Systems

Dakota State University, Madison SD

Taught advertising, consumer behavior and marketing classes.  Hired in August 1986 as assistant professor.  Promoted to associate professor in May 1995.  Granted tenure in 1997.  Promoted to full professor in May 2001.  Continue to teach marketing research (capstone course for marketing majors).

Mount Marty College, Yankton SD

Part-time instructor for evening class in public relations. Academic year 1982-1983.

 

Instructor in Journalism and Education

South Dakota State University, Brookings SD

Part-time instructor for course in public relations and            media techniques to non-journalism majors.  Also instructor for career planning classes.  1976 to 1981.

 

Fundraising Experience
Development Coordinator

KESD-FM, Brookings SD
Public radio station located on campus of SDSU.  Position funded by 6-month federal development grant, December 1976 to May 1977.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinated first fund-raising and public interest campaign.

  • Designed and organized a direct-mail campaign and telethon. 

  • Supervised student clerical staff and volunteers. 

  • Developed programming guide for radio station.

Accomplishments: 

  • Increased local, public awareness of radio station. 

  • Organized the first "Friends of Public Radio" telethon

 

Assistant to Director

Alumni Association, SDSU, Brookings SD

Employment from September 1975 to May 1976 through graduate assistantship with Journalism Department.  September 1975 to December 1976.

Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinated alumni reunion activities, dinners, mailings.

  • Wrote for quarterly alumni newspaper.

Accomplishments: 

  • Improved system of processing alumni news notes.

  • Coordinated office activities while director served as educational lobbyist. 

  • Took over some of the responsibilities of Development Director while that position was vacant 

Marketing and Public Relations Experience
Merchandise Manager

Dakota Advertising, Yankton SD

In-house advertising and marketing agency for Gurney Seed and Nursery Company and Henry Field Seed and Nursery Company.  Both are multi-million dollar, mail-order companies. August 1985 to August 1986.

Responsibilities:

  • Selected products for new catalogs, magazine space ads and package stuffers. 

  • Supervised special advertising projects. 

  • Developed marketing plans for new projects, matching customer profiles to media and product selections.

Accomplishments:

  • Designed two catalogs, both in new market areas. 

  • Responsible for product and vendor selection, pricing, catalog typography, scheduling and production. 

  • Supervised production of greeting card line.

Copy Director

Dakota Advertising, Yankton SD

Hired as copywriter in June 1981.  Promoted to senior copywriter in January 1983.  Promoted to copy director in February 1984.  Promoted to merchandise manager in August 1985.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervised staff of copywriters, typesetters and freelancers who produced radio, newspaper and magazine ads; magazine and newspaper articles; public relations news releases; customer service publications; bimonthly gardening newspaper; corporate newsletter; and 15 mail-order catalogs a year. 

  • Responsible for departmental budget, staffing, electronic equipment acquisition and maintenance.

Accomplishments:

  • Improved budget record keeping. 

  • Expanded corporate PR plan to include national magazine articles.

  • Supervised the rewriting and typesetting of customer service publications for both companies. 

  • Streamlined the department's typesetting operation for catalogs and ads. 

  • Developed training materials and typesetting guidelines. 

Editorial Assistant

MONTANA OUTDOORS, Dept. Fish and Game, Helena MT

Bimonthly, full-color magazine used as public relations tool. February 1972 to February 1973.

Responsibilities: 

  • Supervised all rewriting, editing and proofing of magazine. 

  • Wrote regular column and feature articles. 

  • Served as liaison between printer and publisher. 

  • Maintained production schedule.

Accomplishments: 

  • Produced magazines free of typographical and grammatical errors. 

  • Improved communications between printer and publisher.
