Computing and Network Environment

 

Central Management

 

The Systems Support branch of Computing Services provides centralized support for

personal computers and other systems on the campus-wide network:

Approximately 300 Desktop PCs located in computing labs and faculty/staff offices

Approximately 1300 Gateway M275 and 120 Gateway/Motion M1300 tablet-

PCs for faculty/staff/students (mandate program for fall 2005 freshmen, sophomores and juniors; to include all undergraduates fall 2006)

Macintosh systems – 30 Mac G4 computers

37 Microsoft Windows 2003 servers

Active Directory, Exchange-2003, and Microsoft XP

HP EVA SAN with 4.5Tb for data storage

Access to the Regents Information System mainframe

Faculty/Student supported system:

sun420 - Quad processor Sun server running Solaris

sun250 - Dual processor Sun server

Silicone Graphics – dual 16 processor machines

HP – five servers supporting academic applications beyond the standard

            centralized services

 

 

The campus network consists of fiber starred to all buildings from the Server Room in the

Science Center. Cat-5 connections extend to all classrooms, offices, and dormitory

rooms. An 802/11 g/b wireless network overlay supports mobile computing in all

classrooms, academic offices, administrative offices, the Dakota Prairie Playhouse, and

the Community Center / Fieldhouse. Internet connectivity is provided through 10M

Internet1 and 5M internet2 connections.  An Allot is used to shape network traffic

through the internet.  DSU hosts one of three DDN Core Sites, the network supporting

state/local government agencies, the K-12 school districts, and public higher education

institutions.

 

Intrusion detection is proved by a CISCO IDS, Firewall services are provided through

CISCO PIX 515, spam filtering on e-mail is provided through Mail Marshal. Cicso Clean Access is used to control access to the wireless network.
