From the invitation to the Karl E. Mundt Library dedication, June 3, 1969:
On the campus where Karl Mundt and his wife, Mary, once taught -- General Beadle State College in Madison, South Dakota -- a new building is being added to the "skyline" of this prairie community educational center. The structure is the Karl E. Mundt Library.
It will house the Mundt collection of historical papers and archives and serve as a center for the public services educational and inspirational projects and programs to be sponsored by this Foundation.
The idea was developed in 1962 by the late George M. Hunter, publisher of the Madison (S.D.) Daily Leader. Mr. Hunter suggested that Senator Mundt’s voluminous and valuable papers, public documents and memorabilia of public service accumulated in nearly three decades of Congressional services be assembled for public use in such a library and that the Foundation also sponsor a series of activities and programs dedicated to strengthening our American system.
The Karl E. Mundt Historical and Education Foundation was, in 1963, established by friends and admirers of Senator Mundt in South Dakota, Washington, D.C., and across the nation.
Through the cooperation of college and state officials, it was agreed that a new library at the college and the requirements for this Freedom Service Center would be combined into one structure the Karl E. Mundt Library.
Something over $850,000 have been provided for the new library. State and federal funds have been allocated for the costs of that segment of the building to serve college library needs. To this, the Foundation has pledged itself to contribute an additional $170,000 for construction costs and, in turn, one floor of the three floor structure will be set aside for exclusive housing and utilization of the Mundt records and to serve as the operating center for the Foundation.
Additional funds will be needed to ensure the completion and the activities of the Freedom Center which, in addition to housing and utilizing the Mundt historical collection, will engage in a variety of programs to encourage high school and college students as well as others to better comprehend and appreciate the necessity for maintaining our basic American Constitutional concepts.
